The Music Department of the University of South Dakota is proud to announce the first annual South Dakota Cello Day 2020!

The day is filled with fun activities such as cello ensemble, concerts, and masterclasses. Our featured guest is internationally acclaimed artist Emilio Colón who was named 2017 Artist of the Year by the New York Classical Music Society. Prof. Colón was appointed as one of the youngest professors in the history of music schools in the United States at Indiana University -Jacobs School of Music and is the founder and director of the International Chamber Orchestra of Puerto Rico. The event is led by our own USD cello professor and cellist of the renown Rawlins Piano Trio Sonja Kraus.

We would like to congratulate our cello/bass professor Dr. Sonja Kraus, who has successfully defended her DM dissertion today at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

A native of Germany, Dr. Kraus is an internationally acclaimed cellist, teacher, and music scholar, whose concertizing and teaching career has taken her through Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the United States. Currently, she holds the position of Assistant Professor of Cello/Bass at the University of South Dakota and is the cellist in the renowned Rawlins Piano Trio. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of South Dakota, Sonja was the Cello Professor at the Universidad de Especialidades Espíritu Santo as well as the principal cellist of the Orquesta Filarmónica Municipal de Guayaqil in Ecuador.

USD is home of the largest strings and orchestral studies program in the state of South Dakota. Scholarships for cello or double bass majors, minors and participants are available on a competitive basis. #USDSOhistory Prof. Usher Abell (1915-2003) served as violin faculty and conductor of the USD Symphony Orchestra from 1946 until 1977.

Professor Abell received degrees in violin performance from the Murray State University in Murray, Ky., and the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo. He married Edith Barnes Parrish on Aug. 27, 1939, in Martin, Tenn. He taught violin at Ouachita College in Arkadelphia, Ark., and was concert master of the Arkansas Symphony in Little Rock from 1939-42. He served as a musician in the U.S. Navy from 1942-45, and in 1946, he joined the faculty at the University of South Dakota as an instructor in violin. In 1952, he became chairman of the University Music Department, a position he held until 1969 and served 16 years. He was instrumental in gaining membership for the USD music department in the National Association of Schools of Music. He was founder and first president of the South Dakota Music Teachers Association and served as vice president and president of the West Central Division. He was the first president of the South Dakota String Teachers Association and served as Province Governor of Phi Mu Alpha National Music Fraternity for nine years. He served as adjudicator, clinician and conductor in South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota. He conducted the USD symphony for many years. He played violin and viola in the Sioux City Symphony for more than 30 years, and also played with the symphonies in Sioux Falls, Omaha, Neb.; Yankton and the Cherokee, Iowa, and Black Hills Chamber orchestras. In 1946, he gave his first violin recital with the late piano professor Genevieve Truran, a collaboration that continued yearly for 30 years. He organized and played in a string trio sponsored by the S.D. Arts Council that performed more than 40 programs for the public school students of South Dakota. He served 20 years as chairman of the student audition for S.D. Federation of Music Clubs and orchestra chairman for the S.D. All State Orchestra for many years. He was an original board member of the National Music Museum, Vermillion. He and his family dedicated the Abell Family Gallery to the museum in 1986. In 1980, he and his son Dr. Tom Abell, established the Abell Family String Scholarship Program to support string and orchestra student participation in the university. He retired from USD in 1976, after 31 years of teaching.

#USDSOhistory The University of South Dakota Symphony Orchestra back in 1923, under the direction of Prof. Winfred R. Colton (1879-1975).

Professor Colton's main teachers included Arthur Hartmann and Leopold Auer. He joined the faculty at USD in 1908 as the violin faculty and director of the university orchestra, and served as the Dean of the College of Fine Arts from 1921 to 1950.

Bands at the University of South Dakota

Important information regarding auditions for our Band Program. For additional questions about joining our USD Symphonic or Concert Bands please email Dr. John LaCognata ([email protected])

Auditions for the USD Band Program will be held on Tuesday Aug. 27, 2019 from 3:30pm-5:20pm (Fine Arts Building, room 155). Each instrument will auditioned by their applied faculty member. These auditions will determine selection and seating in the Symphonic Band as well as selection to the wind and percussion section of the Symphony Orchestra (see separate orchestra excerpt if interested). The audition will consist of: prepared excerpt(s), 2 major scales, a chromatic scale, and sight-reading. You can find the prepared excerpts on the Symphonic Band webpage: https://www.usd.edu/fine-arts/music/symphonic-band

Students will be placed in either the Symphonic Band or Concert Band based upon the audition results. Membership in the Concert Band (MUEN 122) does not require an audition. All USD students with band experience are accepted into the band. A chair placement audition will take place at the beginning of the semester.
