USD’s Movement for Resilience.
WHAT IS LOST & FOUND?
Lost & Found connects college students with the tools and community to develop lifelong resilience. Based in Sioux Falls, SD, Lost & Found is a campus-based movement founded by a group of USD students in 2010 to address the growing issue of suicide facing young adults ages 15-34. Chapter programs focus on three core areas: Resilience for Self, Resilience for Others, and Resilience for Community.
The USD chapter was the first student chapter of Lost & Found, in operation since 2011. Our goal? Making USD a place where mental health—and each student's life—are made a top priority.
WHY LOST & FOUND?
More students than ever in South Dakota and around the nation are experiencing depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. Over 20% of students nationwide reported anxiety causing an impact on their academic performance in 2016, and a whopping 85% of students felt overwhelmed by the work they needed to complete.
Both in South Dakota and around the country, campus counseling centers are experiencing unprecedented demand. Between 2010 and 2015, campus counseling center demand nationwide increased by 30%, yet enrollment only increased by 5%. Demand has only further increased, and counseling centers will remain strapped for resources until something else can be done.
At a time when suicide is second leading cause of death for college-aged students, getting effective treatment and finding the skills and community to live well are more important than ever. No life is worth a test, a relationship, or a job, and suicide cannot be taken back.
That is why Lost & Found is committed to connecting students to the tools and community that contribute to a life of resilience. Chapter programs are designed to meet the specific mental health needs of a campus, and our organization's values of compassion, understanding, and inclusion drive our work to collaborate with any and every organization on campus willing to commit to improving mental health for all students.
