Meet our 2026 Hall of Fame Inductees. Induction ceremonies to take place Aug 28th and Aug 29th.

Today we recognize Davey Whitney Sr - (Midway Colored School 1944) - Outstanding Scholar, College Athlete, Professional Baseball All-Star, and Championship High School & College Coach.

Davey Whitney was born in Midway, KY and attended the Midway Colored School, graduating from the 8th grade as Class Salutatorian in 1944. When he and his classmate spread to other Kentucky high schools, Davey chose Dunbar High in Lexington and led the basketball team to a Kentucky High School League State title in 1948. After high school, he attended and graduated from Kentucky State University in 1952. While there Davey lettered in basketball, baseball, football, and track.

Davey then began playing in the Negro American League for the Kansas City Monarchs from 1952 to 1954 as a shortstop and third baseman, and was named an All-Star in 1954.

1954 was also the beginning of Davey’s basketball coaching career where he led Burt High School in Clarksville, Tennessee. In his time at Burt High School, he collected 200 victories, three State Championships, won the1961 National Negro High School Basketball National Championship and was named the 1961 National High School Coach of the Year.

As a long-time successful college basketball coach at Southern University and Alcorn State, Davey retired in 2003 with a 566-356 record, 6 NCAA tournament appearances, 12 SWAC titles and was named the SWAC Coach of the Year 9 times. He was inducted into the Kentucky State, Alcorn State and State of Mississippi Sports Halls of Fame.

Former NBA guard M***a Ellis has agreed to become the men's basketball General Manager at Alcorn State, per school release. 🪓

Ellis spoke about his new role: "I'm truly honored and excited to be named the General Manager for men's basketball at Alcorn State University. Alcorn isn't just a university. It's a place built on history, tradition, excellence, and a legacy that has impacted generations."

M***a Ellis is no stranger to Mississippi, he is a Jackson, MS native and was a McDonald's All-American out of Lanier High School.
