Volunteer hours take place every Sunday (5-6 with a potluck after!) and Wednesday (5-6). Be sure to message us with any questions // let us know if you'd like to receive our regular reminder emails. The GroW Community Garden is a block-length plot of land (located on H Street between 23rd and 24th Streets). It is supported by the George Washington University, and maintained by two student managers (employed by the University) as well as our strong volunteer base. All of our produce is grown to support the work of Miriam's Kitchen (www.miriamskitchen.org): a nonprofit organization that aims to end chronic homelessness in Washington D.C. Miriam's incorporates fresh, local produce into the meals they serve their guests Monday through Friday every week of the year. In addition to supporting Miriam's, the GroW Community Garden functions as a tool to educate and build community at GW. We offer students and community members a place to learn about native, organic food systems by providing service opportunities in sustainable gardening, food distribution, and community outreach. We also raise awareness through education and advocacy around issues of local food production, environmental justice, and developing a strong local economy. Our potlucks, which take place after every Sunday volunteer session, are also a crucial part of our garden's operation that support community among students interested in farming, food, and justice. During academic year, the GroW Community- a student organization separate from the physical GroW Garden- hosts various events for students to engage in farm and food related events outside garden hours. Activities include group cooks and panel and speaker events. The GroW Community also partners with DC Community Foodworks to offer a farmshare CSA program for GW students (which they can purchase using GWorld for their fall and/or spring semesters). See our separate GroW Community page for more information!
