Take a look inside the camps for internally displaced people in Kachin state. These people have been forced from their homes primarily because of the ongoing conflict between the independent ethnic army and the national Burmese army.

In a recent visit to Kachin State, Burma, USCB staff visited several IDP camps to learn of the conditions and what humanitarian assistance is needed to sustain the thousands of IDPs. These photos were taken in Pa Kahtawng IDP camp located in the KIA controlled area of Mai Ja Yang. Click through the photos to gather more information about this camp and the urgent humanitarian assistance that they so obviously need. Keep in mind that the U.S. government is provided absolutely NO aid to the camps.

Yesterday, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir ordered the release of all political prisoners in Sudan. Today, seven were released.

It's not quite "all," but it's a start.

Six political prisoners are freed in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, a day after President Omar al-Bashir promised more freedom to opposition groups.

LISTEN UP! This Wednesday there will be an interest meeting for a proposed Alternative Break in Burma for the first time ever!

From coordinator Shoshanna Sumka: "Many AU students have been passionate about working for freedom, justice and democracy in Burma over the years. We've had multiple Alternative Break trips to the Thai-Burma border, but never gone inside Burma. Now that the country is open to responsible travelers, for the first time, American University is considering hosting an Alternative Break trip to Burma and is looking for student leaders. Possible social justice topics for the trip include, but are not limited to: education, environmental development, and the changing political landscape. Join us in the Kay Lounge on Wednesday, March 27th at 2:00pm to discuss ideas for a trip proposal and enjoy refreshments."
