We're so excited to welcome our newest Eagle Families - congrats to our early decision Class of 2024 students!

Families - your next step is to like and follow us on Facebook. Easy. Then, celebrate! We know your student's acceptance is the result of years of hard work and family sacrifices. We applaud you, too.

Your student's next step is to claim their AU account - see the link below.

Clawed wanted to help us install these great #signsofkindness in time for finals. They’re going up all over campus, thanks in large part to the generosity of AU Parent Isobel Magee. Clawed needed a rest before we put up the rest... stay tuned for more. And THANK YOU Isobel!

But what we really want to know is WHERE can we get that AU Christmas Sweater that President Burwell is wearing?

The week before finals, President Burwell hosted three Pop-Up Study Breaks with s’mores, hot chocolate and cider, and plenty of holiday cheer for students!

We are deeply saddened by the tragic events in Jersey City, NJ today. To all of our affected Eagle families, we hold you in our thoughts.

We also realize how hard it can be for students when they're worried about a situation back home. If your student needs support, please encourage them to reach out to campus resources.

The Counseling Center (202-885-3500) has drop-in hours 2-4 pm, Monday through Friday, to be seen without an appointment (which is free). For concerns impacting academic success, they can touch base with their academic advisor or Dean of Students office ([email protected], 202-885-3300). Kay Spiritual Life Center and its chaplains are also available for prayer and reflection.

Be kind to each other.

For our social fraternities and sororities, spring recruitment is only weeks away. Whether your student is just curious about the pledging process or they're already proudly wearing Greek letters, we're pretty sure that you've got some questions. Join us for this session with staff and parents who will help explain various fraternal organizations on campus, what they do, how they recruit and how we all work to foster their academic success and responsible leadership.
This live session will be recorded - just register and we'll automatically send you a link to review it at your convenience.

Community Voice partners with Street Sense Media

Here's a short piece to brighten your day.
AU filmmakers team up with Street Sense media to elevate the voices of those experiencing homelessness. Street Sense is part of DC's landscape - a newspaper written and sold by homeless and formerly homeless artists and vendors. Through the Community Voice Lab, AU helps Street Sense Media to learn the skills to produce quality work. Another great instance of AU Changemakers in action. https://www.american.edu/soc/news/community-voice-partners-with-street-sense-media.cfm

** We shared this news with students today and we wanted to share it with parents and families as well. The text of the memo is below. **
As the semester draws to a close, we know that some students find themselves with more meal swipes than they can use. Many of you have asked for a practical, equitable way to share these excess meal swipes, which don’t roll over into the next semester, with classmates who could use them.

Next week we are launching a pilot program, Eagles Helping Eagles, to enable that to happen. From Monday, Dec. 9 through Friday, Dec. 13, the final week of the semester, students can stop by the OneCard office to donate up to five of your leftover meal swipes to others.

Donated swipes will be banked, and the Office of Campus Life will distribute them confidentially with students next semester on the basis of need as part of our food insecurity initiative. Along with The Market, AU’s food pantry, this will help to ensure that all members of our student community have access to healthy, nutritious food, regardless of budget or personal circumstances.
Students who choose to donate extra swipes can stop by the OneCard Office on the First Floor of Mary Graydon (MGC 123) during business hours to initiate the donation process:

The mythical independent voter isn't going to save us

You know we follow elections a little bit, here, right?
Our own Candice Nelson, professor of public affairs, co-wrote an article for CNN about the myth of the independent voter. Nelson and her co-author wrote, “Independents are not nearly as ‘neutral' as we think.”
https://us.cnn.com/2019/11/15/opinions/independent-voter-america-myth-magleby-nelson/index.html

David B. Magleby and Candice J. Nelson write that approximately two-thirds of self-identifying independents actually have partisan leanings -- and by and large vote according to those leanings.

“The support I’ve received from AU, both from faculty and staff and donors, has given me the chance to do things I would have never imagined possible in my life. When I reflect on my family’s financial situation, living paycheck to paycheck, losing our house, losing our car, living in New Jersey in December and having your heating turned off… I don’t feel ashamed anymore. That part of my life is one of the reasons I got into AU, and why I earned financial support during my time here. It made me into a determined young person, and at AU I have the support of a community of people who want me to excel.” – Jarryd, class of 2019

Giving Tuesday: AU Fund for Student Support

We know it's only Monday, but Giving Tuesday is TOMORROW and we've launched a special page to help illustrate how much the AU Fund for Student Support matters.

Your gift of any size helps unlock opportunities students wouldn't be able to take advantage of otherwise - from studying abroad to a stipend to support an unpaid internship. Your support shows Eagles that there is a community cheering them on as they make their impact on the world.

Click below to read Jarryd's story. Some of you might recognize the kinds of challenges he's faced and how the AU Fund for Student Support has made all the difference.

Join us on Giving Tuesday to help all Eagles thrive! You can ensure all Eagles, current and future, can access an American University education without the crushing weight of financial insecurity.
