Tyra B. Laster (Master’s in PRCC, May ‘19) is from Marietta, GA. She earned her B.S. in Mass Communication from Tennessee State University. Tyra is a 2018 FORBES 30 Under 30 Fellow and a HOYA30 nominee. Before starting at GU, she was a Summer Editorial Intern with VIBE Magazine and a Rolling Out Business Contributor and creative team member for Kontrol Magazine. In DC, she landed a job as a Digital Marketing Associate for an Ed-Tech company where she is responsible for all social media development for B2B and B2C. Aside from her career strengthening endeavors, Tyra is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® and Color Communications.
The prominent reasons why Tyra chose Georgetown are: The exclusive resources and the institutions credibility. GU is rooted in resources that only students have access to including well-rounded instructors, like-minded classmates, and impeccable opportunities. The quality of GU’s curriculum has created a credible reputation, which has catapulted professionals to greater heights. Tyra chose PRCC because of its Corporate Communications aspect. She loves how broad the Communication field is, but always found herself drawn to editorial/journalism, digital strategy, and the use of social media in corporate today. GU offers an outstanding program that provides perspective into a corporate setting, which will help leverage and execute her goals with the additional help of the programs’ diverse network.
Tyra is interested in doing research on diversity and inclusion in the workspace and explore how it resonates through social media representation and engagement. She aspires to be Editor and Chief of Essence Magazine or to be Director of Communications for a Fortune 500 Company. Furthermore, Tyra is the owner of greenshelfapp.com, which connects people to books. She hopes to gross enough in sales and partnership to sell the company for double. When asked to share advice to other students she said, “Understand that there is no perfect roadmap to your career destination. What has worked for someone else, may not be what’s best for you (and that’s ok). Ask questions, be a sponge, and show up. If anything, show up.”

This week's alumni feature highlights Yang Yang, an Editor & Associate Producer at 2M Media Group. Yang is an alumnus of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences MA in Communication, Culture & Technology program (’17). As a part of her work at 2M Media Group, Yang works on a series of mini documentaries and studio interview projects where she is involved with all aspects of pre-production, production, and post production.

Yang highlights her time at Georgetown as giving her the opportunity to explore and realize what she wanted to do. “Georgetown really reminded me how much I like the creative part of this industry. I took a class in my last semester called Audio Storytelling. From then I realized my interest in radio storytelling and sound production. Finding this job was an unintended consequence of that hobby and interest. I learned a lot from doing video production, sound production, sound mixing and sound design,” she said.

One of Yang’s best memories from Georgetown was the house she lived in. “It was a once in a life experience to live with these girls who are all from different cultural backgrounds and I learned a lot.” she said. She discusses that living with 5 other girls from different cultures & different programs sharpened her English skills and gave her the chance to jump out of the Communication program to interact with people who were completely different from herself.

Yang’s advice to current students: “To be curious and never think that something is irrelevant to you. I learned so much about politics, which I didn’t sign up for. I watched all the debates with my roommates, who were in the foreign policy program. Those experiences helped me form my ideas about foreign policy, my world view even. Just be a sponge for information, to keep studying and have fun too!”

The Georgetown University Board of Directors meeting took place this morning. The proposals to address unpaid internships and assistantships, mental health financial support, and the need to strengthen graduate student engagement were all well-received. Other issues raised included the expansion of the GUTS bus route, and the need for graduate student space on campus.

We are committed to addressing the issues of graduate students on campus. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have concerns.

Unpaid Internship and Assistantship Support

GradGov will be tackling many important issues this semester, one of which is unpaid internship and assistantship funding for graduate students. This Thursday, October 4th, President Sadien will lay out the importance and need for students to be able to pursue unpaid internships and assitantships without jeopardizing their financial situation. She will be presenting to the Georgetown Board of Directors and would love your input.

Please take a second to complete this survey, and pass along.

We need to be able to make a case for unpaid internship/assistantship support (i.e. through stipends ).
