On April 5, GWTAN, our illustrious group of dedicated alumni, hosted their annual Spring Colloquium at The Westin Georgetown. This year’s event was one of the best to date and featured Mr. Taleb Rifai, Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)—the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of sustainable and accessible tourism. Mr. Rifai had a wonderful presence and really connected with our audience as he authoritatively spoke of tourism today, declaring that we are in an era of travel and tourism. He shared his knowledge of the tourism industry gleaned from years of experience in various roles and ministries and discussed the global impact of tourism. The Secretary General was also presented with the Meritorious Service Award by the department (pictured above) for his championship of tourism, visionary work and dedication.

The Spring Colloquium was a great success check out this quote from one of our attendees!!

"I wanted to thank you for the opportunity to come and listen to Dr. Rifai speak last night. It was an incredible opportunity, and I feel very fortunate to be in that room. Hearing Dr. Rifai speak on tourism with such passion and authority has me incredibly excited about my future within the industry, and I can't wait to get started."

UNWTO comes to a successful end
The United Nations World Tourism Organization THEMIS Foundation course on Sustainable Tourism: International Cooperation for Development came to an end after a successful two-week run in DC. Its rigorous and comprehensive curriculum provided participants a useful toolkit for sustainable tourism development, shared insights into the tourism industry from various businesses and organizations, and helped facilitate the creation of a sustainable tourism project development proposal.
UNWTO students had the opportunity to listen to lectures from and
network with influential employees of such organizations as the
Department of State, the World Bank, the International Finance
Corporation, Sustainable Travel International, Solimar international and
US AID, as well as our very own university professors Iain Christie, Donald Hawkins, Kristin Lamoureux, Stuart Levy and Juan Luna-Kesler. MTA students created long lasting relationships with the international
participants and this experience will undoubtedly lead to future collaboration and has already generated countless Facebook friend requests and comments.
