Hoya Arts

Hoya Arts Hoya Arts is a community of art enthusiasts committed to expanding artistic opportunities at Georgetown University.

Hoya Arts aims to bring more creativity to Georgetown, making space for artistic expression and appreciation of the arts for all. In 2007, our founders saw creativity as Georgetown's achilles heel and strove to remedy this weakness by providing creative opportunities for all types of students regardless of prior experience. Hoya Arts (formerly known as the Georgetown University Art Aficionados) became a Student Activities Commission official organization in 2009 and has worked since the club's inception to afford students accessible artistic opportunities on campus, such as art workshops, student exhibitions, lectures, art-themed parties, and more. Off campus, Hoya Arts hosts museum, gallery, and art event outings in DC. As a community of art enthusiasts committed to expanding artistic opportunities at Georgetown, Hoya Arts works to catalyze creative thinking among students and strengthen Georgetown’s commitment to open discourse, the free exchange of ideas, and the education of the whole person. Simply put: we create opportunities for Hoyas to make art and get inspired.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude's The Gates, Project for Central Park, New York City

Check out this article on Christo and Jeanne-Claude's The Gates in New York city, 2005!

Go attend Christo's lecture at 7pm tomorrow (Monday) in Copley Formal! There will be a Q&A session after.

"The Gates, in Central Park, 26 years in the making, mile upon mile of billowing fabric, is the largest artwork since the Sphinx. But what does it mean? As Jeanne-Claude might say, what a dumb question."

Hey everyone,

The Hoya is publishing a special arts issue this Friday. We're currently looking for anybody interested to write a 700-900 word piece about specific works of art around D.C. or a particular exhibit that has inspired you. Providing photos is encouraged but is not necessary. Feel free to use something you've already written! They'd like the article in by late Tuesday night or some time on Wednesday at the latest. We know this is is a really quick turnaround, but we'd really love it if GUAA had a presence in the issue.

If you're interested or have any more questions, email Hannah Kaufman at [email protected].

On Elite Campuses, an Arts Race

Standford, Harvard, U Chicago, Rice and Princeton are coming in hot, Gtown want to follow up?

“Campus museums and arts centers, offering performances and public exhibitions, are intended in part to help schools mend strains with their communities while appealing to students who “expect an advanced university to have an art museum as part of what they offer, especially in a world where the visual is so foregrounded,”

Harvard and other top private universities spend heavily to upgrade museums and build more artistic centers.

The golden ratio

"rhythms apparent to the eye and clear in their relations with one another. And these rhythms are at the very root of human activities. They resound in man by an organic inevitability, the same fine inevitability which causes the tracing out of the Golden Section by children, old men, savages and the learned."
