“As public health researchers, we see risk factors of disease transmission in migration patterns and how people move from place to place. The fact that the international migrants go underground and become marginalized poses a threat to the public health system — there is a significant barrier to reach these people through traditional surveillance or response channels, and it is hard to provide the necessary basic health care services for those in need.”

Alumni Update: Meghashish Sharma '17

A year since his graduation from the MSGH program, Meghashish is now working as a Field Officer on a research project undertaken by the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Over the next eight months, his team will collect data in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

The project is the first of its kind, exploring and estimating the per capita cost of healthcare services in India using a bottom-up approach. These data will be used for conducting health technology assessments, moving India's UHC agenda a step forward.

Meghashish credits Georgetown with preparing him for this work: "Faculty guidance and support was instrumental. I excelled in workshop exercises thanks to my graduate coursework. I was able to connect with like minded researchers who were impressed by my skills in health economics and budgeting."
