International Education Week #IEW2019 is almost over but we are excited to share another @au_sis staff study abroad memory from Christiana Kasner, Assistant Director of SIS Research Promotion. Christiana also studied in Brighton, England in 2001! #FlashbackFriday
• • •
From Christiana: While I just started at AU in August, I am an alum of the SIS-IC program (MA), and participated in a student abroad program while here, too. These are from my time as a student in Brighton, England in late fall 2001. My trip came just after 9/11. My time in the UK made the role of the citizen diplomat very clear to me, and highlighted the need for cultural understanding in a way no other experience could. From Brighton-By-The-Sea to Stonehenge, I was reminded of the many ways a global mindset could give me a broader understanding of the world, but also the impact of my interactions with others as a representative of the US. This really served to reinforce my determination to become part of the global dialogue on the benefits of international exchange, not just for me personally, but as a mechanism for understanding, peace, and change, both at home and abroad. 🌍 #SISAbroad #CitizenDiplomacy #StudyAbroadBecause #Brighton @ England

Today for #TBT as part of our #IEW2019 series highlighting @AU_SIS faculty and staff we’re sharing memories from SIS Distinguished Professor Miles Kahler who shared photos and memories from his first time teaching in China in 1980.
• • •
From Professor Kahler: Although I have visited many universities (most recently at the University of Toronto’s Munk School last fall), my first teaching visit to China in December 1980 remains memorable. Fudan University, now one of the top universities in Shanghai and China, was still recovering from the Cultural Revolution. I was not prepared for the cold classrooms, but the warm welcome extended by the university and my remarkable, enthusiastic students more than compensated for any shortcomings. #SISAbroad #China #ThrowbackThursday @ Shanghai, China

Our next profile in our staff study abroad highlights for #IEW2019 is Christine Gettings, Director of International Programs and Partnerships in @SISAbroad In 2000, Christine studied abroad at the University of Westminster in London during her Sophomore year @americanuniversity During this time, Christine focused on European Studies with a focus on the Irish Peace Process. In these photos, she is touring Hyde Park with fellow @AmericanUAlum Rebecca Geller and visiting the Rock of Cashel in County Tipperary, Ireland
• • •
From Christine: My favorite memory from studying abroad was during my internship at Womankind Worldwide, an international women’s advocacy organization, when I learned that one of my colleagues, Helen Pankhurst, was the descendant of Emmeline Pankhurt and Sylvia Pankhurst, two prominent leaders in the British suffrage movement. @ London

Happy Wednesday Everyone! We’re excited to share our next #IEW2019 staff study abroad highlight, Marley Crutcher, the SIS Director of Graduate Advising, who has worked at AU since 2005, shared her experience studying anthropology in Costa Rica in 2000...
• • •
One of my favorite aspects about studying anthropology in Costa Rica in 2000 with @kustudyabroad was the field trips that we took to learn from local communities. On this trip we had ridden via horseback to a remote indigenous community to learn about their traditions and lifestyle. In the first picture, my two professors and I are enjoying a simple breakfast of arroz con frijoles. In the trip shown in the second and third photos, we travelled via tractor to visit an eco-lodge on the Osa Peninsula where we learned hands-on how cacao is harvested and processed. #puravida

Next up for our series highlight @AU_SIS faculty/staff abroad is Briggitte Suastegui, SIS Undergraduate Advising Assistant since March 2019! Briggitte is another @americanuniversity alumna and studied about @au_madrid in spring 2017.
• • •
From Briggitte: My favorite memories from abroad come from the routine things that made up my life in Madrid – the big Sunday lunches my host mother prepared every week for the family, curling up with my host family’s dog Nora, and the beautiful sunsets I’d catch every day on the way home from class. I loved exploring all the different parts of such a unique country with so much history and personality – Toledo, just a short drive outside of Madrid, might have been one of my favorite trips we took in the program. I was lucky to be able to visit other countries in Europe as well, and fell in love with Italy - as you can see by my gelato-fueled smile in front of the Trevi Fountain in Rome. I can’t wait to go back! #IEW2019 @ Spain

Next up in our staff study abroad memory series is David Lindgren, Associate Director of Research @AU_SIS who studied abroad in Nairobi, Kenya as a student @americanuniversity ! @au_abroad @au_nairobi
• • •
From David on his time in Kenya: While the sights and sounds of my time abroad in Kenya were amazing and at times breathtaking, I’ll always remember the people who were part of my daily experiences, either at my internships or in classes. They challenged me, and as a result I grew from my experience and made lifelong friends.

Our first @AU_SIS staff study abroad memory for #IEW2019 comes from Elise Goss-Alexander, @siscareer Advisor who studied abroad in Syria in 2011 as a student right here @americanuniversity ! #SISAbroad #AUAbroad StudyAbroadBecause @au_abroad
• • •
From Elise on her time in Syria:
My time studying abroad in Syria in 2011 changed my life in ways I could never have foreseen. It sent me to grad school and then to my first jobs in human rights. In Syria, I learned about resilience, both my own and other people’s. I built relationships that remain incredibly meaningful today, almost a decade later. I continue to unpack what my time abroad means to me as that meaning shifts, but I know I wouldn’t trade it for anything..

And here we go...our first SIS Travel Support Highlight for #IEW2019 is Lisa Bochey! Lisa, a graduate student in SIS, used the SIS Graduate Research, Conference, and Internship Travel Support to travel to Puebla, Mexico in October 2018, and attended the annual Fulbright Conference, here she presented a poster on research drawing from her time as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Peru. As her first poster presentation experience, the International Development and aspiring PhD student says, “I had the wonderful experience of learning how to share my research with others and gain feedback from seasoned researchers on how to build on my work in the future.” Lisa also enjoyed conference sessions on diversity and inclusion, as well as connecting and reconnecting with other in the Fulbright community. #SISAbroad #IEW2019 #Mexico #Fulbright

Greetings from Kyoto, Japan! This week staff from @au_sis, along with our colleagues from Ritsumeikan University (RU), welcomed the second cohort of RU Sakura Scholars to begin the Joint Degree Program in Global International Relations at RU! During the four-year program all students will spend two years at RU and two years at AU to earn one joint degree issued by both schools. This fall AU will welcome some of the Sakura Scholars from RU (pictured) at AU to begin their studies in DC. Meanwhile, AU’s first cohort of Sakura Scholars will move to Japan to study at RU for two full years starting in September. Learn more about Ritsumeikan University by following our story! Also, it was only fitting that the cherry blossoms around RU’s campus were at full bloom during our visit! 🌸🌸🌸
• • •
Fun Fact: ‘Sakura’ means Cherry Blossom in Japanese and the name of the joint degree program ‘Sakura Scholars’ symbolizes not only the long-standing partnership and friendships between AU and RU but also between Japan and the U.S. The cherry blossom small tree behind us was planted by SIS Professor Patrick Jackson when the program was formalized in 2017.

Photo submitted to the 2016 SIS Int’l Photo Contest by Kimberly Maldonado (SIS DM) is pictured at Wat Chaiwatthanaram Buddhist Temple in Ayutthaya, Thailand. Description: During a Southeast Asia trip, I did in 2015. I was finally able to visit one of my favorite landmarks. Seeing myself so small in this photo reminds me of our place in this world and how little we are in comparison to the world and its wonders. From 2014 onwards, the "Walk in U.S., Talk on Japan" highlights individuals from Japan who come from a diverse range of backgrounds and also have various connections to the U.S. They form groups, each of which is led by a "group leader" with a relevant area of expertise. While travelling through various major U.S. cities, each group takes part in exchanges at a local grassroots level, discusses important factors of the future Japan-U.S. relationships, and talks about recent positive developments in Japan.

Repost @sarimishap from summer 2017 -casually hanging out next to an active volcano 🌋 ... Azerbaijan has 300-400 mud volcanoes mostly around the coast. They don't erupt very often, but when they do the explosions can be impressive! Natural methane deposits below the surface keep the mud warm and bubbly. It was pretty amazing to stand right next to the open crater!! #🇦🇿#mudvolcano #azerbaijan #nature#environment #bakusummer2017#bakuenergyschool #fieldtrip #sisabroad#rockingthetshirt #exploring #woah

Here's a great article on how the recent election in the US could affect the Norther Ireland peace process. It's by Kimberly Cowell-Meyers, who was one of the professors for the Conflict Transformation Maymester in DC and Belfast!
The AU/ Queens University Belfast Conflict Transformation Maymester students visited the Crumlin Road gaol, a victorian prison that held petty thieves during the Irish potato famine, Irish suffragetes, and Troubles era paramilitaries.
