HSA Elections 2019-2020:

Believe it or not, the election cycle for the 2019-2020 academic school year is upon us! If you are interested in running for a position and/or voting, please read this carefully!

On April 9th at 8:30pm in WGR 211, we will be holding a study break with board games and snacks! The Election Process will begin promptly at 9:15pm.

We will vote in the order of our Constitution for the 8 executive board positions: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Public Relations Chair, Engagement Chair, Community Service Chair, and Special Events Chairs (2).

Eligibility Requirements to Run for HSA Board:

You can run for a maximum of 3 positions.

Submit an email to [email protected] by Tuesday, April 9th at 5pm. Your email should include the position(s) you are interested in - preference must be in accordance with the order of voting - and a 3-4 sentence blurb on why you would like to run for the position, how you are qualified, etc.

Be physically present on 4/9 at 9:15 pm in WGR 211 and if you wish, give a short speech (90 seconds max) before voting begins for your position.

Meet with the board member (highly encouraged) who currently has the position that you are interested in (see below) by 4/9 to understand the expectations and responsibilities the role entails.

In addition to the requirements above, in order to run for HSA president, you must have served on HSA board this year.

Voting Eligibility Requirements

In order to vote, you must:
1. Be a full-time Georgetown undergraduate student.
2. Be physically present on 4/9 at 9:15 pm in WGR 211. If you come late or must leave the room at any time, you will only be eligible to vote for the positions you have heard the candidates for. I.e. - if you leave during Secretary speeches, you will not be able to vote for that position. However, if you are back in time for the start of Public Relations speeches, you will be allowed to vote again as normal.
3. Be an active HSA member, which consists of having attended at least 1 weekly Āratī service during a given semester AND/OR have actively participated in the majority of all activities sponsored by The Hindu Students Association.

*The Hindu Students Association openly admits undergraduate students to its membership and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, disability, gender, ethnicity, national origin, or sexual orientation.*

Election Process

We will vote one position at a time, going in the order of our constitution (see above). Each candidate is offered the opportunity to present a 90-second speech, after which community members will vote via the distributed Google Form link for the position. There will be no ranking system this year, rather only one vote. Winners will be announced immediately. Then we will move to the next position.

If a candidate wins a position but had listed a secondary position of interest, they will be removed from that ballot. If a candidate does not win a position but listed a secondary position of interest that is still up for vote, they will remain on the ballot. For example, if Jane Doe had expressed interest in being Secretary and Community Service Chair but did not win Secretary, she would still be on the ballot for Community Service Chair. If she did win Secretary, she would be taken off the ballot for Community Service chair. Keep in mind that we will vote for Secretary before we vote for Community Service chair because we will be voting in a specific order (see above).

Lastly, please bring your phones or laptops on 4/9 to assist with the voting process.

We hope this was clear, but please feel free to email [email protected] if you have any questions. Have a great day!

Below you will find a description of each position on HSA board, along with the name of the board member who currently holds that position. Remember that if you want to run for board, it is highly encouraged that you reach out to the person below who currently holds the position you are interested in and meet with them by 4/9.

We condemn this act of wretched hatred and keep the Georgetown University Muslim Students Association as well as the greater Muslim Community in our thoughts and prayers. We stand by our Muslim brothers and sisters on this campus, as an act of injustice against one faith community is an act of injustice against us all. To a compassionate, strong and faithful group that makes this campus a better place to live in for all of us: we are with you and are here for you in whatever way you may need us.

The Georgetown HSA community stands strongly with our Muslim brothers and sisters all over the world 🙌🏾

#nomuslimban

Below is a text version of the statement.

Dear Hilltop Family,
The Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Muslim Ban turned a blind eye to the unmistakably xenophobic, Islamophobic, anti-immigrant, and anti-refugee rhetoric which has continuously been brought forth by this administration. However, we, the Georgetown University Muslim Student Association, are speaking out against injustice where it is apparent regardless of its source. We are appalled by this attack on religious liberty, immigrants, and refugees.

As Americans,
We regard this ruling as an active threat against individuals from these banned countries and against the entirety of American society. This decision is connected to the continued depiction of Islam as a foreign religion. However, as leaders of the civil rights movement of the 1960s, life-saving and life-changing doctors, and cab drivers that keep our cities running, among other crucial roles, it is obvious that Muslims are just as unapologetically part of the American fabric as anyone else.

As Muslims,
We do not solely speak out about this issue merely because of its impact on Muslim Americans. The Muslim ummah, or global community, is much like a body. Our Prophet and Messenger of God, Muhammad (S), stated that “The believers in their mutual kindness, compassion, and sympathy are just like one body. When one of the limbs suffers, the whole body responds to it with wakefulness and fever.” Intricately and intimately linked, even a small bit of pain in one area of the ummah sends shockwaves to our global humanity.

As Georgetown Students,
We value the Georgetown Jesuit tenets of interreligious understanding and concern for the marginalized, and our respect for these values extends beyond the Hilltop. It is of utmost importance for us to stand together as faculty, staff, and students against any form of bigotry that may present itself.

In our Georgetown Muslim community alone, this ruling has affected international students, students from immigrant and refugee families, dual citizens, and many more members on the Hilltop. It has prevented students and their relatives from attending weddings, obtaining access to medical treatment, going home from school for summer breaks, and visiting loved ones abroad. Such a ruling has produced a climate of fear for Muslims and has institutionally challenged our American, Muslim, and Georgetown ideals of religious freedom. The right to live peacefully regardless of race, religion, national origin, is one we believe is endowed by our country and our faith- one that cannot be simply disregarded by one leader or one decision. As representatives of the Georgetown Muslim community, we look forward to advocating for our communities in the face of bigoted policies regardless of who is enacting or endorsing them.
