Financial Literacy Program

Financial Literacy Program The Financial Literacy Program (FLP) is a student led initiative that was founded in April 2011 at The George Washington University in response to the growing need for increased engagement around the issue of financial literacy.

The Financial Literacy Program (FLP) was founded in April 2011 in response to the growing need for increased engagement around the issue of financial literacy. FLP sources financial literacy volunteering opportunities in the DC area. Its mission is to facilitate the engagement of GW graduate students, staff and alumni in mutually beneficial volunteering opportunities that promote dialogue and understanding around issues of everyday finance. The program focuses on leveraging the talent and professionalism of the graduate student body at The George Washington University to expand the impact and reach of local non-profit organizations who are leading the battle against financial illiteracy in the DC area and beyond. Rather than attempting to reinvent the wheel, FLP forms strategic partnerships with these organizations that create simultaneous value for all stakeholders – including volunteers, recipients and non-profit administrators. All volunteers are appropriately trained prior to engaging with the community; they are not expected to be gurus of finance, but rather encouraged to bring with them a willingness to learn and to spread knowledge of financial education. FLP is open to all George Washington University graduate students, staff and alumni, regardless of program or professional background, and equips volunteers with the training and support-base necessary to acquire and spread financial knowledge on and off campus. At its core, the program uses the pertinent issue of financial literacy as a bridge between GW and the greater Washington DC area.

Mission: To facilitate the engagement of GW graduate students, faculty and alumni in mutually beneficial volunteering opportunities that promote dialogue and understanding around issues of everyday finance.

General information

After two years of existence FLP’s impact includes facilitating 13 volunteer events through our partners, training 59 volunteers who have volunteered 285 hours and educated over 385 DC residents. FLP members have facilitated financial literacy curricula to elementary, middle school, high school and adult learners, in English and Spanish, in private, public and charter schools, and in all DC quadrants. In 2012, the Financial Literacy Program was honored at the GWSB Business Gives Back Event, putting FLP in the public eye for the innovative ways students and alumni are using their business acumen to address local and global issues. In 2012, the program’s founder, Amir Abdallah, was selected to receive the Student Impact Award as a result of his efforts.
