Through approaches that reflect our Jesuit heritage, our core mission of creating knowledge and our commitment to justice and common good, we seek to foster deeper understanding of sustainability and spur action on the issues. The University is pursuing broad-based, practical approaches to sustainability, including an ambitious commitment to cut our carbon footprint in half by 2020. On campus, we are implementing real-world sustainability solutions, using the campus as a living laboratory and developing a long-term sustainability strategy to guide our work.

Georgetown University's Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS) invites all faculty to apply to new programs in support of Sustainability Education. Made possibly by a university grant through the Laudato Si' Fund, faculty can engage in a series of consultations to design new course assignments that integrate sustainability concepts with core course subject matter in Designing Sustainability-Focused Assignments, and can also join a Faculty Learning Community on Educating for Sustainability where they'll meet together over the course of the academic year to explore Sustainability Education topics. Both programs are currently accepting applications. Learn more: http://bit.ly/2XXPG2h

On hot days, Georgetown participates in a region-wide voluntary energy curtailment program to help save energy, reduce emissions, stabilize the power grid and avoid brownouts in the DC metro area. Help our University community save energy on hot days through small acts such as adjusting your window-blinds to block heat gain and powering down your computer at night. This month, Office of Sustainability interns are continuing to perform waste audits for the Pilot Compost Program in Leo’s MKT. The data collected from these audits will help to inform strategies to reduce contamination in Leo’s compost stream and decrease waste. The audits follow a month of education in February at Leo’s to help students compost properly.

During these audits, the Leo’s compost stations will be open on March 20th, 24th, 26th and 28th. Thank you for participating in the pilot program! @hoyaeats @guauxiliarysvcs @guauxiliarysvcs

FREE May Transition Housing and paid positions for Move Out Drive volunteers!

The annual Move Out Drive is Georgetown’s end-of-the-school-year contribution to our community and the environment, inviting members of our campus community to "re-purpose their packing" at the end of the semester by donating gently used household items to local charities. Last year, Move Out Drive volunteers collected over 55,000 lbs of donated materials, worth $186,000, for dozens of local charity organizations, and kept this material out of landfills.

Move Out Drive volunteers and volunteer leads receive FREE May Transition Housing in exchange for helping to manage donation centers around campus, collecting donations from off-campus residents, and advancing the MOD mission to minimize waste and serve our community. The Office of Sustainability is seeking to recruit student volunteers and volunteer leads (paid position) who are passionate about environmental sustainability and social justice to contribute to the success of the 2019 Move Out Drive.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis with a deadline of April 12.

Over the past month, the Georgetown Office of Sustainability and our partners have been working to educate diners at Leo’s on how to aid in the ongoing Post-Consumer Compost Pilot Program. Sustainability interns like @rennymsimone have been stationed by the composting bins at Leo’s MKT and answering questions about what can be composted. This March we’ll be starting a second series of compost audits to better understand how to ensure an uncontaminated compost stream. Keep your eye out for our Compost Team over the next couple of weeks and big thanks to Hoya Eats GREEN - Georgetown Renewable Energy and Environmental Network @guauxiliarysvcs and GU Facilities Management!

It was such a pleasure to host and participate in yesterday's Sustainability Solutions workshop with members of our Georgetown University community and renowned thought-leader William McDonough. Thank you to all who participated and thank you to Georgetown President John J. DeGioia for your support and your thoughtful reflections on the importance of this work!

Earlier today, I attended a “Sustainability Solutions” workshop hosted by our Office of Sustainability as part of our University’s ongoing efforts to build a more sustainable campus community. During the workshop, teams of Georgetown students presented proposals to deepen our sustainability efforts, and William McDonough, a distinguished leader in the field of sustainable development and co-author of "Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things,” shared his experience and expertise with us. I wish to again thank Mr. McDonough for his ongoing support of our sustainability efforts and express my appreciation to all of our student presenters—thank you for your commitment to this important work.
