Amnesty International at the George Washington University is a student-led chapter of Amnesty International working to educate the GW community about human rights violations around the world, and to take action to prevent and end them. We do this by not only bringing in human rights activists, professionals, and academic figures to campus to speak to students and engage them on critical human rights issues, but also through actions such as letter writing, protesting, lobbying, and launching university-wide campaigns. As both students and activists, our goal is to foster a community of dynamic activism and create a conversation on campus about human rights in the world today, and how we, as students, may help create a better tomorrow. We advocate for human rights for all and the protection of justice, freedom, truth, and dignity around the world. Join us: we hold meetings every other Tuesday at 8 PM in the Marvin Center (room 413). To receive updates about our meetings and events/information on human rights issues, send your name and e-mail address to [email protected].

Become an Amnesty Decoder

Hello everyone! In our increasingly digitalized age, targeted harassment of women on social media platforms has become more and more common. Unfortunately, many of these websites/apps have not taken adequate action to prevent the spread of hateful and violent posts. In order to foster a safer social media environment, Amnesty International has launched the Troll Patrol Program.

With the help of thousands of online volunteers, Amnesty International will track, analyze, and report instances of hate speech directed towards women on Twitter. If you would like to get involved with this program, please click this link and follow the simple, on-screen instructions.

https://decoders.amnesty.org/projects/troll-patrol

We thank you for your time, effort, and dedication to creating a more positive social media experience for women!

Help Amnesty researchers analyse hundreds of thousands of tweets to track abuse against women online. It takes just a few minutes to sign up, and as little as 30 seconds to start detecting online abuse. Decoders is people power at its best – sign up now.

America, will you be okay?

Amnesty GW stands in solidarity with our fellow GW student who was recently deported under the Trump administration’s new immigration laws. We find it disgraceful that a student’s opportunity for education is being taken away due to the xenophobic nature of the executive order signed last week.
Everyone is welcome here.

DPE Presents: "On the Front Lines of Women's Rights in the DRC" with Julienne Lusenge

Join us tonight for an event we are co-sponsoring!

Delta Phi Epsilon Professional Foreign Service Sorority and Amnesty International USA present: "On the Front Lines of Women's Rights in the Democratic Republic of the Congo," a Conversation with Julienne Lusenge. The event is co-sponsored by the GW African Student Association, Sigma Iota Rho Honors Fraternity, the GW chapter of Amnesty International, Amnesty International Capitol Hill Group 211, and Amnesty International D.C. Africa Group. RSVP on Eventbrite to guarantee your spot: http://bit.ly/1Ui6MPE

Read Julienne Lusenge's bio below:
_ _ _
Julienne Lusenge began her career as a radio-journalist, documenting horrifying sexual abuse and children’s rights violations at the hands of warring parties in Eastern Congo-DRC. When war broke out in the late 1990s, she and her colleagues founded an organization dedicated to defending and promoting women’s rights in eastern DRC: Solidarité Féminine pour la Paix et le Développement Intégral (SOFEPADI). SOFEPADI began with no funding; it was driven by the sheer will of Madame Lusenge and her colleagues to help women caught in the crossfire of war. Today, SOFEPADI continues to help survivors of sexual violence to access support and bring perpetrators to justice.

In 2007, Ms. Lusenge launched a second organization, Le Fonds pour les Femmes Congolaises (FFC), which works to strengthen local Congolese women’s groups working to ensue women’s rights to physical integrity, economic justice, and participation in decision-making spaces. FFC also began with no funding, but has since received grants from all over the world. FFC continues to make incredible progress in areas including sexual and gender-based violence, HIV/AIDS, economic empowerment, and women’s leadership and participation in politics.

Ms. Lusenge has been an advocate locally and on the international stage for decades, making a difference in women’s and children’s lives wherever she goes. Currently, she is focused on seeking access to local justice for survivors of sexual violence in the DRC. In 2013, she was honored by the French government with the Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honor). In 2015, she spoke in front of the UN Security Council, arguing for women to be included at the table for peace talks. Despite unimaginable hardships in achieving her goals throughout her life, Ms. Lusenge has become one of the strongest and most respected advocate for women and girls in eastern DRC and across the world.

Domestic Violence and Abuse: Signs of Abuse and Abusive Relationships

#DCSC15: 43% of dating college women report experiencing violent and abusive dating behaviors. This abuse may involve an enormous amount of manipulation, and a victim may begin to convince themselves that certain behaviors or feelings are normal or justified, such as:

- Fear of your partner and/or their emotions and reactions
- Belief that you deserve emotional or physical pain
- Threats against you, or threats of harming themselves if you leave
- Extreme control over your actions and other relationships
- Your partner forcing sex, and you feeling unable to say no

If you feel that something is “off” about someone else’s relationship, or even your own, don’t be afraid to trust your gut. Help and support are available, and no one deserves the abuse that someone else chooses to commit. Learn more: http://www.helpguide.org/articles/abuse/domestic-violence-and-abuse.htm.
