GU European Club

GU European Club The Georgetown University European Club, founded in 2004, welcomes all Hoyas with an interest in all things European.
(2)

The European Club, open to ALL students of any background, was founded in 2004 to bring together Europeans, Americans, and anyone who has interest in anything relating to Europe on Georgetown's campus. The club provides a forum for members to share knowledge about ALL European countries and the European Union and to become more familiar with the integration process. Of course, social events - including Embassy events as well as more informal gatherings - are also an important aspect of the club. This club was not created only for Europeans, but for everyone who wants to learn more about Europe and the EU, socialize with both internationals and the internationally-inclined on campus, and most of all, be part of a great campus organization. Follow our updates on this page, Twitter (@GUEuropeanClub) or Hoyalink (https://hoyalink.georgetown.edu/organization/gueuropeanclub).

“There is a fundamental contradiction that we as journalists are trying to address: Europeans think they know Americans - they see them on TV and in movies, they consume American media and culture - but they don’t understand how Americans think, and how different Americans are from themselves.”
~ Marieke de Vries: correspondent for NOS, the Dutch Broadcast Foundation, speaking at our European Journalist Panel @ Georgetown University

DC correspondents from across Europe came together tonight to discuss how they report on America for a European audience.

The consensus? Explaining the nuances of debates over abortion, gun laws, and the opioid epidemic to the European public while trying to keep up with the latest episode in the drama of the Trump presidency is far from an easy task.

Father Desbois gave a chilling and fascinating talk in which he dissected, line by line, the different arguments made by Holocaust deniers in Europe. When asked why he feels there has been a resurgence of anti-Semitism in Europe and the US, he told us: “Hitler feels far away.”

Professor Natividad Fernandez Sola delivered a fascinating take on Brexit - why it happened and where it’s going - and, equally importantly, introduced us to a vast array of European political cartoons.

The Georgetown European Club and friends braved the snow to visit the Embassy of Finland last Wednesday. While we were impressed by the snow-day turnout, the Finnish diplomats were unfazed - one casually mentioned she had biked to work that morning.

We were treated to an engaging talk on Finnish culture and foreign policy and enjoyed authentic Finnish food in the beautifully designed embassy.

For our final event of the year, the Georgetown European Club took fifty students to the French Embassy.

The French Ambassador spoke to students for an hour, answering critical questions about French politics, U.S./EU relations, and the rise of populism across Europe. He was candid and open with us and had everyone laughing at his witty quips about Macron, Trump, and the French!

Our Story

The European Club, open to students of ALL backgrounds, was founded in 2004 to bring together Georgetown students with a passion for European culture and community.

The club provides a forum for members to learn about all European countries and the European Union in both formal and informal ways. Formally, the club organizes embassy visits, educational events, and fun cutural exchanges. However, a pivotal aspect of the club is its platform to share culture informally - through a common passion for, say, a European sports team, cuisine, or musician.

This club was created not only for Europeans, but for everyone who wants to learn more about Europe and the EU, socialize with both internationals and the internationally-inclined on campus, and most of all, be part of a great campus organization. Follow our updates on this page, Instagram (@georgetowneuropean) or Hoyalink (https://hoyalink.georgetown.edu/organization/gueuropeanclub).

Come join the European club for a screening of OSS 117: Cairo: Nest of Spies Start off your Saturday evening with one of the most iconic French comedies of the century. Watch the misadventures of secret agent Hubert Bonisseur as he stumbles through a web of international intrigue. He truly must have been the inspiration behind the Map of the Modern World class: Hubert: "It's breathtaking. I love panoramic views. This one is stunning. Your civilization truly is grandiose! To build this 4000 years ago was visionary" Larmina: "The Suez Canal was built 86 years ago" Refreshments and subtitles in English will be provided
Dear Georgetown European Enthusiasts, The Swedish-American Chambers of Commerce of the USA is looking for a Georgetown student for a unique internship experience. SACC-USA is looking for a writer/editor to help them out with writing articles for their newsletter. The newsletter has a focus on Swedish-American trade relations, specifically business opportunities in the US for Swedish companies, http://www.sacc-usa.org/news/newsletter/ They are looking for someone who can spend 10-15 hours per week. The hours are flexible and much of the writing can be done outside our office. This is an unpaid position. SACC-USA is located in House of Sweden (Swedish Embassy Building) near the Thompson Boathouse at the edge of Georgetown. I held this internship during spring 17' and the experience was incredibly rewarding. You essentially serve as a journalist and editor and by working with a team of young Swedes you get great access to the diplomatic and intern community of European internationals in DC. I am now living and working in Sweden and highly recommend checking out this opportunity! /Blake Morgan - Class of 17'
