Since you all provided such great answers regarding Graduation can you all share your advice on the popular new AU family member question "How long should families plan to stay when moving in their first-year student in August?"

05/15/2019

Great question from a class of 2020 parent: "Congratulations!!! We’re coming up right behind you Class 2020 Parents - any advice to share about the senior year (graduation tickets, photo sessions, how-to’s)? But again, congrats to you and your Eagles!"

Overheard on the steps of Anderson Hall yesterday:

Scene: A student is taking a picture of a father and son after moving him out of his residence hall room.

Student Photographer: “We gotta get a picture for the Gram.”
Father: “Oh yes, your Grandparents would love a picture of this!”
Son: “Uhh, Gram like post the picture to Instagram Dad!"

Housing Cancellation and Termination | Housing & Residence Life | American University, Washington, D.C.

If your student is planning to live off-campus next year, remember that April 29 (Monday) is the last day to cancel on-campus housing without a cancellation fee! To cancel, your student just needs to log into the Housing Portal and follow the steps. That will free up spaces for others, and also (not incidentally) avoid the $1000 penalty fee. As parents, you’re an important link in the communication chain – so please remind your student to cancel on time if they’ll be living off campus. Thanks! More information is here:

Resident students looking to terminate their housing for the upcoming semester must complete and submit a housing termination form to the Housing & Residence Life office.

Parents of incoming first-year students: Encourage your student to join University College (UC). After 15 years of success, UC is AU’s longest running living-learning community! UC is open to all first-year students, but space is limited, so students should reserve their place today. For information about UC and how to reserve a place, please visit the UC website at https://www.american.edu/learning-communities/universitycollege/ and click on the link entitled How to Enroll. If you have questions about UC, please call the office at 202-885-3967 or e-mail [email protected]

Dining Services Request for Proposal

We've made important progress in our search for a dining partner! The Request for Proposal (RFP) has been released and the bidding process is officially open. Early this summer, we'll choose a dining partner that meets the priorities identified by the community -- particularly our students, who (in typical engaged Eagle fashion!) have participated in forums, surveys, and on the dining project and RFP committee -- and they'll be ready to provide tasty, fresh, nutritious food by August. You can follow the timeline online to see what happens next and when:

This is the time of year when students hear if they got their preferred housing for next year – and for some upperclass students, that can mean a few weeks of uncertainty if there weren’t initially enough spaces for demand. Please be assured that there will be many more spaces for Fall available shortly! Some of it will be in new apartment-style, close-to-campus housing, which will replace the Berkshire; once that’s announced, upperclass students who want housing but didn’t get it will hear what to do next. (They won’t have to reapply.) We’ll also know after April 29 about spaces that will free up on campus. As usual, all incoming students and sophomores who meet the deadline are guaranteed space, but if you’re the parent of an upperclass student who is still waiting for housing, please stay tuned and remind them to watch their email for next steps!
