Day 3 of Health Careers Nurse Camp 🩺

Today our campers took the next step in their hands-on learning! Students split into three groups and went to one of three critical access hospitals:

📍 Buchanan County Health Center (Independence)
📍 Grundy County Memorial Hospital (Grundy Center)
📍 Community Memorial Hospital (Sumner)

Our group in Independence jumped right in—learning CPR and even practicing how to give injections! 💉👏

It’s Health Care Careers Camp week at Allen College! 🩺

We’re excited to welcome high school students to campus for a hands-on week exploring the many roles within health care.

Day 1 kicked off with interactive virtual reality experiences and practicing health assessments—an incredible start to a week of discovery!

Collaboration starts early at Allen College.

Our Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy students, joined by Speech-Language Pathology students from UNI, participated in the first Introduction to Rehabilitation Professions experience—exploring teamwork through hands-on learning and interprofessional collaboration.

From hands-on learning stations to meaningful reflection, this experience highlighted how collaboration across disciplines leads to stronger patient care.

💬 “This experience fosters a strong foundation for effective teamwork,” shared Associate Professor Kate Reiter.

The result? A deeper understanding of how each discipline contributes to patient care.

Today we recognize Juneteenth, a day that commemorates June 19, 1865—when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Juneteenth is a time to reflect on the enduring pursuit of freedom and equality, while also celebrating Black history, culture, and contributions. It became a federal holiday in 2021.

OTD students in action!

Workplace Ergonomic Assessments

Through ergonomic workplace assessments, our students were able to support Allen College faculty and staff while gaining hands-on experience. Occupational therapy helps individuals perform at their best within many environments, including the workplace. It is amazing what a few chair adjustments and raising of screens can do!

A powerful milestone on June 15

Twenty-four accelerated nursing students received their white coats, officially stepping into clinical education. Kristen Buseman ('15 & '25) shared an inspiring message about resilience, and Elizabeth Schreiner (Accelerated Nursing, August 2026) reminded students to support one another through the challenges ahead.

Congratulations to these future nurses as they begin this important next chapter!
