Severe weather has kept the Taraia Object expedition team from returning to shore on Nikumaroro. The crew is extending its trip, with improved weather conditions expected in the coming days.

While waiting for conditions to improve, the team has completed an initial underwater survey of the lagoon, conducted archaeological work, and set up a solar-powered system to monitor weather and tides.

At least two more days of fieldwork are needed before the team can determine what the Taraia Object might be. Safety remains the top priority.

Purdue is celebrating 40 years of nighttime excitement at Ross-Ade!

Purdue Football night games like Friday’s matchup with Washington are nothing unusual for today’s Boilermakers. But it wasn’t so long ago that they were a novelty.

Purdue hosted its first night football game on Oct. 18, 1986, when Ohio State visited for a contest that TBS Network televised nationally. A truck-based portable lighting system with more than 360,000 watts of power bathed the field in light that evening.

Between 1986 and 2016, the Boilermakers played under temporary lights during eight night games — half of which were against Notre Dame — before the university installed a $5.6 million permanent lighting system at the stadium.

Purdue debuted the new lights in the 2017 home opener, defeating Ohio University 44-21. Entering the Washington game, the Boilers have played 17 night games under Ross-Ade’s permanent lights.

The search for answers is taking shape on Nikumaroro. 🔬🌴

After traveling to this remote South Pacific island and getting set up for fieldwork, the Taraia Object expedition team is putting a long-standing hypothesis about Amelia Earhart’s disappearance to the test. Researchers are gathering data, using technology to investigate an object identified in satellite imagery and uncovering new environmental details about Nikumaroro along the way.

Through the expedition and its partnership with Kiribati, the team is building a valuable new picture of the island. Whatever the investigation reveals, discovery is already underway.

The first day of fieldwork preparation is complete. The Taraia Object expedition team has cleared a path to the research site, set up staging areas and begun assessing conditions on Nikumaroro ahead of its investigation into a visual anomaly that may be linked to Amelia Earhart’s missing aircraft.

The team cleared the trail in two hours, with at least four coconut crabs encountered along the way. No crabs posed a threat to the operation. 🦀
