Pace University’s Elisabeth Haub School of Law (Pace Law) is ranked #1 in the country for environmental law by the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings that were released today.

“For the past four decades, our environmental law program has led the way in training environmental defenders and advocates who have gone on to serve in law firms, government agencies and NGOs across the globe,” said Dean Horace Anderson. “We are proud that in our program’s 40th anniversary year, the scholarship of our faculty, the quality of our teaching and the experiential learning opportunities we provide to our students has propelled us to the top of the field.”

"We are proud of our work training practitioners, advocates and environmental defenders, but humbled by the challenges that lie ahead," said Jason Czarnezki, Kerlin Distinguished Professor of Environmental Law and Associate Dean of Environmental Law Programs.

Professor Katrina Fischer Kuh provides insightful answers to important questions about climate change. Check out the link below.

The symptoms of climate change—extreme weather, severe drought, rising ocean temperatures, starving polar bears—are becoming more apparent every day. Which is why informing ourselves—and participating in the public debate—is one of the most important things we can do.

The Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University was pleased to host a lecture by Professor Herman Kasper Gilissen of Utrecht University today. The lecture, Climate Resilience in Coastal Regions, drew on Professor Gilissen's experience working on pioneering climate resilience approaches in the Rhine Delta.

Professor Gilissen has just concluded three months of research on comparative climate change adaptation and mitigation with the Pace Global Center for Environmental Legal Studies. We capped off his visit with a faculty book exchange—Professor Gilissen gifted the Pace Law Library with a copy of European and Dutch Water Law by H.F.M.W. van Rijswick & H.J.M. Havekes and Professor Kuh gifted Professor Gilissen a copy of a book that she edited with Michael B. Gerrard, The Law of Adaptation to Climate Change.

Check out Professor Karl Coplan's blog post "Some Suggested Principles for Individual Carbon Offsets" https://greenlaw.blogs.pace.edu/2019/01/17/some-suggested-principles-for-individual-carbon-offsets/

I’ll confess up front that I am not a fan of offsets. Addressing climate change will require people in the developed world to live with a smaller carbon footprint. We need to redefine the Western ideal of the “good life” to substitute a vision with less energy consumption. That will only happe...

Check out Land Use Law Center Executive Director Jessica Bacher and Professor John Nolon's piece about how governments must focus on sustainable development and fair housing.

When we started the Land Use Law Center at Pace Law School 25 years ago, we dedicated our efforts to promote sustainable development. We quickly learned that this meant working at the local level and reviewing comprehensive land use plans, zoning and other land use regulations.

Gastbeitrag: Eine Alternative zur Agrarindustrie

On November 19, Professor Narula published an op-ed with the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Hilal Elver, and Hunter College Professor Marc Edelman, calling on European states to vote in favor of the Declaration. The op-ed, which appeared in the German publication Frankfurter Rundschau (see below), argued that States must ensure peasants’ rights to land, seeds, and food sovereignty. The op-ed further argued that if provided proper supports, peasant agriculture can help alleviate rural poverty, address climate change, and advance other Sustainable Development Goals. On November 20, the “Third Committee” of the U.N. General Assembly voted in favor of the Declaration – the penultimate step toward its formal adoption.

Professor Smita Narula addressed U.N. General Assembly delegates at a side event organized by various U.N. missions to support the adoption of the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas. Professor Narula commented on the need for a new normative framework to protect the rights of small-scale food producers and farmworkers who are increasingly under attack by State and corporate actors. She also fielded questions from U.N. delegates on the legal implications of the Declaration.
