Come visit! Friends of Goodstay Gardens was founded in 1993 to help restore, maintain, and celebrate this magnificent garden gem located in Wilmington, Delaware. An intimate niche on the grounds of the University of Delaware’s Goodstay Center on Pennsylvania Avenue, the garden is one of the oldest in the state and traces its legacy to the du Pont family. Planted in the early 19th Century in the American Tudor style, the garden is partitioned into "rooms" with boxwood hedges bordering gravel paths. Ellen du Pont and her landscape architect husband, Robert Wheelwright restored and enhanced the gardens in the early 1920’s, changing from vegetables to flowers with iris, rose, and peony "rooms". A more naturalistic area, known as The Park, was recently renovated, as was the Magnolia Walk, which was originally added in 1938. Upon her death in 1968, Mrs. Wheelwright left the property to the University of Delaware. The Friends of Goodstay Gardens invite you to visit this horticultural treasure situated halfway between downtown Wilmington and Greenville, Delaware. Close to Hagley, Winterthur, and Longwood Gardens, Goodstay is a small, peaceful setting with world-class iris and peony displays in late spring. We also invite you to volunteer your time to maintain this historic garden for future generations.

When other bloomers shrivel in the heat this pretty lily springs up to take their place. We're loving the late-blooming low-maintenance Licoris sguamigera, also known as Suprise Lily right now at Goodstay.

We're trying something different with the fountain pond this summer. This is Jeh, our engineering-minded volunteer, stopping by to see how it's going. As you can see, the fountain is off and we've planted some water plants which are thriving. What you can't see are the many tadpoles maturing in the water. We're expecting a mass exodus at some point... If you stop by, you will also see dragonflies hovering about.

Blue skies for now... lilium henryi 'Lady Alice' is enjoying the sun and heat today, but the garden is looking forward to the tropical rain heading this way to relieve the dryness.

Formal gardens can have casual elements too. Our gardener scattered some ammi seeds on the edge of the knot garden to blur the edge. Also known as laceflower, ammi is a non-invasive relative of Queen Anne's lace. 'Dara' is the variety here and we're loving the burgundy-pink color and its carefree nature in this summer heat!

We are excited to embark on another big garden renovation project! Thanks to Friends of Goodstay board member Shem Rudszczyk of Hagley for his guidance in restoring the wooded area we call The Park. We are very lucky to have experts from our local gardens willing to help keep us on track. Before we can get to the glamorous part, the "canvas needs to be cleared". Poison ivy and various invasives will need to be dealt with before our plan of adding back some native specimens can be implemented. This will be a multi-season endeavor that Beth is eager to get started on!

At Goodstay our mission has always been to make a beautiful place for the community to enjoy free of charge. In light of the feelings of exclusion that our community members of color have expressed these past few weeks, Friends of Goodstay Gardens would like to make it known that this garden is for EVERYONE. We mean that sincerely. Regular visitors, be sure to let your friends of color who may not be aware that the garden exists for their pleasure as well, that it is here just waiting to be explored. There is nothing we enjoy more than seeing new visitors discover the garden. Pass it on! By the way, the roses are in bloom...

The variation of color within the Iris genus is just astounding with around 300 different species. The name "iris" is derived from the Greek name for rainbow for obvious reasons! We think his muticolor iris is a hybrid called 'Wabash' introduced in 1938.

The "Goodstay Rose" aka Rosa 'Pink Leda' is in bloom in one corner of the knot garden! (And so are our other roses.) It is a very old rose that was common in colonial times and survives today because of how tough it is. Settlers use to bring them along in their covered wagons as they headed west. This one remained east however ;) We believe the rose was in the garden prior to Ellen du Pont Meeds Wheelwright's time in the 1920's. With no special attention, it continues to thrive, and the scent is divine!

We've been rehabbing some survivors from the old iris garden in another bed to get ready for replanting back into the garden this fall. We think this one is Iris 'superstition'. It is stunning, don't you think? PS- we miss you OLLI!
