The Hellenic University Club of Wilmington in cooperation with The National Hellenic Society, Philadelphia Chapter, present an exclusive screening of

CLIFFS OF FREEDOM

Monday, June 10th, 2019 at 7:00pm.

Marianne Metropoulos' screenplay and beautiful story is set within the prism of the Greek War of Independence in 1821. The film is produced by National Hellenic Society Members, the Metropoulos Family.

The Greek spirit and quest for freedom is poignantly captured within the context of a compelling motion picture feature that teaches, inspires and bring and important era of Greek history to life.

Cliffs of Freedom is a compelling story reflecting the myriad of experiences and sacrifices that echoed throughout Greece. We honor, respect and appreciate the forbearers of freedom as told through a story that will certainly touch you and remind you of who we are and the spirit within each of us.

We hope to see you there!

Greek monument at Tatnall was once a 1920s Wilmington gas station

You could say the Grecian-style monument that's been sitting on the grounds of The Tatnall School in Greenville for the last 54 years is a real gas.

The structure, inspired by the classic Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens, Greece, is possibly the only service station of about 50 built by and operated by the Atlantic Refining Co. from the 1920s that's still standing.

In 1964, Tatnall School received an old service station that had been at the corner of 11th and Washington streets in Wilmington since the 1920s.

World's oldest intact shipwreck discovered in Black Sea

A 2400-year-old shipwreck has been discovered in the Black Sea. It appears to be Greek in origin and is believed to have been a trading vessel of a type that researchers say has only previously been seen "on the side of ancient Greek pottery such as the 'Siren Vase' in the British Museum."

Archaeologists say the 23-metre vessel has lain undisturbed for more than 2,400 years

Come enjoy a special tour of Philadelphia’s exquisite Rodin Museum with longtime HUC member Zoe Pappas, Philadelphia Museum of Art Trustee and Senior Guide. A neoclassical architectural gem, the Rodin Museum houses the largest collection of work outside Paris by groundbreaking French artist Auguste René Rodin. Rodin has been hailed as the father of modern sculpture -- creating iconic masterpieces like "The Thinker" and "The Kiss."

Our event will be held on Saturday, October 20 beginning at 3 p.m. Those who wish to carpool can meet at Holy Trinity at 2 o'clock. Dinner at Estia Restaurant (5:30 p.m.) will follow the museum tour.

The cost is $20 per person for the museum and $35 for the prix-fixe menu at Estia.

Our event chair is Electra Yorsz, who can answer any questions you may have about the day's activities.

We hope to have you join us!

Out of respect for Sophia Psaltis and her family the HUC welcome back party is postponed until Saturday, 14 October beginning 6 pm, ending at 9 pm at the Blue Ball Barn. For those who aren't aware, Nick Psaltis was president of the club at one point, making Sophia "First Lady." I think we will all remember Sophia as a smiling and kind lady. She will truly be missed.

Please don't forget your dues for this year if you haven't paid yet.

Thank you,
Nina
