Do you know the story behind the Name Berkeley College?

In 1931, visionary educator Alyea M. Brick founded a school for women in East Orange, New Jersey-one that would embody distinction, excellence, and prestige. But first, it needed a name that reflected those values.

Brick chose "Berkeley" —a nod to Lord John Berkeley, one of the original proprietors of the land that would become New Jersey. To honor the name properly, Brick went a step further: he contacted the descendants of Lord Berkeley in England, requesting permission to use both the name and the Berkeley family coat of arms.

With that blessing, a legacy was born.
Today, the modified Berkeley crest still symbolizes our proud heritage and commitment to excellence in education.
