CUSail CUSail is a Cornell Engineering project team that designs and builds a fully autonomous robotic sailboat for competition and oceanic research.

CUSail is a Cornell Engineering Project Team comprised of 19 undergraduate students from 3 different colleges and 8 different majors. We work together as a team to build a fully autonomous robotic sailboat for competition and oceanic research. Each year we design our boat using CAD and then manufacture it using composites and other materials. In June, we compete in SailBot, the International Robotic Sailing Competition held annually. We hope that from our experiences in the competition we can achieve our long term goal of finding an optimal boat design to create an inexpensive autonomous vessel for all different types oceanic and environmental research.

Comp 2026 Recap ⛵️

This summer, CUSail headed to competition to put our autonomous sailboat to the test across a full slate of events. Over the course of competition, we took on Fleet Races, Station Keeping, Precision Navigation, Endurance, Payload, Collision Avoidance, and our Search Presentation, each challenging a different part of the boat’s design, autonomy, and performance on the water.

Outside of competition, the week was just as memorable. Between long days by the lake, we made time for team dinners at Taste of Thai, ice cream runs to Frosty Cow, games of Spikeball, and plenty of time hanging out together!

Comp gave us the chance to see months of work come together, troubleshoot in real time, learn from other teams, and make some great memories along the way. We’re proud of everything we accomplished and excited to bring what we learned into the year ahead 💙🌊
