Today is the beginning of Plastic Free July!! This is. Worldwide movement encouraging us to become aware of how much plastic we use and to say no to single-use plastics. This year I am accepting the challenge and will be refusing single-use plastics for the month of July. Six months ago I had the crazy idea to start a podcast that talked about sustainability and environmentalism like a simple lifestyle that anyone can create! Enter I have truly loved every moment of working on this podcast and getting to learn more about building a sustainable lifestyle and pursuing marine science along with all of you. And now I am taking another leap! I have made Oceans of Hope stickers that are now available on my website! Hi everyone😊 I have gone through a lot of changes in the past month or so so I wanted to re-introduce/share my story here.

So, in July I moved to New York City 🏙 all by myself to teach middle school science 🧬. I started that job at the beginning of July (less than a month after my college graduation 🌲🎓) and then realized that it was too much for me. I have since quit that job, which is really good, but now am finding ways to keep my scientist self alive while working as a hostess and helping to develop a sailing education program ⛵️ (in the very infant stages, so there isn’t much for me to do yet).

I also started my own health and wellness business with Arbonne in June. It has also gone through many ups and downs in the past few months, but I am so excited to see it grow 📈this year and for it to be able to support my passion for marine science! In conclusion, I am figuring life out, which is a lot harder than I thought it would be. That said some things will never change.

The blowholes at Thors Well! I always love seeing blowholes because they are a reminder of just how powerful the ocean is. The constant pounding of the waves over thousands of year bored holes in the ceilings of sea caves that the water is shooting out of in these photos. Such a powerful reminder of how a little persistent work can pay off in big ways down the line!

This is a crinoid! The few species that are left are remnants of an ancient family of echinoids (like sea stars). Most of them live in the deal ocean, but some still live in coastal ecosystems like the coral reef where I saw this one! Also known as feather stars watching them swim is such a treat! Have you ever seen a crinoid?

These are some photos of the tidal marshes in Massachusetts. Marshes and wetlands are such important ecosystems! Not only are they beautiful to look at but they also provide some amazing ecosystem functions! These environments filter out many pollutants from the water before they reach the ocean. They prevent erosion on waterfront property and protect those properties from flooding! They also provide safe habitats for young fish and animals to grow up. Have you ever visited a marsh?

I have been thinking about my time at sea with Stanford@SEA recently! It has been about two and a half years but it was such a powerful experience that when I think about it it feels like yesterday that we left the ship. Not only was it an incredible learning experience with regards to sailing and marine science, but it was also the first time in college that I really felt like I belonged. I was fully accepted by the crew and my shipmates and was able to grow in my connection with the world around me as well as myself through the whole trip! Going to sea or hiking through the wilderness just puts everything into perspective when you see how vast the planet is. I encourage everyone to take some time outside and just get out of yourself. We are all such mere specks in the history of this planet and it can be really freeing to remember that sometimes!
