On May 30, 2026, the international symposium “Between Intersect and Interconnect: The Evolving Encounters of South China and Southeast Asia” was held at Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University. It focused on how South China and Southeast Asia gradually evolved deeper intersections characterized by institutional, intellectual, and social dimensions. Scholars from Peking University, Sun Yat-sen University, Jinan University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, the University of Macau, the National University of Singapore, Universiti Malaya, the University of the Philippines-Diliman, Mae Fah Luang University in Thailand, and Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University gathered.
Dr. Wong Yee Tuan, Research Fellow at the Centre for Humanistic Buddhism of Universiti Malaya, delivered his observations titled “At the Crossroads of Malay(si)a and South China: Reimagining Southeast Asian Studies.” He pointed out that while Malaysia is situated at the intersection of the Malay world, the South China Sea, and multiple colonial experiences, the teaching and development of Southeast Asian Studies in the country face multiple challenges related to language training, archival access, disciplinary boundaries, and the nation-state framework. In particular, he criticized the traditional “nation-state framework” for marginalizing ethnic minorities and maritime networks. He advocated for a reorientation of Southeast Asian Studies through multilingual competencies, diverse archival sources, and transregional comparative frameworks, shifting the analytical focus from state-centric narratives toward transnational flows and maritime connections.

📅May 31, 2026, is a national public holiday in Malaysia—Wesak Day.
Wesak Day is one of the most significant occasions for Buddhists, as we commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and Parinirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha. It is a day to reflect on the Buddha’s compassion, wisdom, and teachings that continue to illuminate the world.
🙏One of the meaningful practices during Wesak Day is the Bathing Buddha ritual. By gently pouring fragrant water over the statue of Prince Siddhartha, devotees express gratitude and reverence to the Buddha, while also reminding themselves to return inward and cultivate purity of body and mind.
✨The act of Bathing the Buddha carries a profound message.
As we bathe the Buddha externally, we also make a sincere aspiration to cleanse our inner defilements—greed, anger, ignorance, arrogance, and doubt—allowing compassion, wisdom, peace, and joy to arise within us.
🌿“Cleansing the Buddha’s body externally, purifying one’s own heart internally.”
Through this simple yet sacred ritual, we are reminded to let go of worldly attachments, settle our minds, and approach life with greater clarity, kindness, and mindfulness.
🏠In conjunction with Wesak Day 2026, the Humanistic Buddhism Research Centre at Universiti Malaya has prepared a Bathing Buddha space. Everyone is warmly invited to take part in this meaningful experience and share in the peace, blessings, and joy of this sacred tradition.
