Masculinity in the Eyes of Public

The idea of hegemonic masculinity only proves that the concept of “man” is actually only built upon the notions of “stoicism” and “strong”. What I mean by that is a man must be stoic, it means that he must not show emotion, he must not complain about his problem to anyone, and he certainly must not shed any tears in front of anyone. So, why must this notion of man being stoic exist? it all comes down to human pride and his fear and insecurities toward other people. Men think that if they get caught crying, their value in society will significantly drop and they think that he is a weak people. He is insecure that if he is seen crying, women will stay away from him. Another notion of man is that they must be “strong”. Being strong here means that he has a muscular body type that makes people psychologically think that he is a strong person. Men believe that by being strong, they can raise their value in the eyes of others. Another point that correlates with muscular body type is that somehow, men that like sports are valued more than smart men with good grades and depictions of smart men in movies are always someone who is a nerd and being a subject of bullying while the jocks are the bully. While these negative aspects are harmful to society on the whole, hegemonic masculinity also promotes positivity. For example, a man, according to hegemonic masculinity, must be brave enough to take a risk.

Cosplay as A Fashion and Lifestyle

The popularity of fashion has been growing explosively. Many brands have emerged with fashion as their products. Brands such as Prada, Gucci, Dior, and Louis-Vuitton are examples of ever growing popularity of fashion. This popularity also creates a lifestyle for upper-class people. People in the upper class always seem to be using this kind of designer fashion and not using the cheap, mass-produced one. Fashion and lifestyle of the different countries also produce different popularity. In Indonesia, fashion and lifestyle are highly influenced by popular cultures that are present in the country. For example, Korean pop culture fans in Indonesia can be seen following the fashion of their Idol. From their clothes, hairstyle, and even their lifestyle. They also buy their favorite idol’s merch to “show support” to them. Another example of popular culture in Indonesia is the Japanese. Besides Korean culture, there are also a lot of people that like Japanese culture. They actually come from liking anime to liking their culture. One of the most awaited events for Japanese fans is the cosplay event. A Cosplay event is an event where people dressed as their favorite anime character, virtual YouTuber, and game come together to show their favorite character’s costume and interact with fellow cosplayers. There are also some presentations of Japanese culture at this event such as Sōran Bushi and Taiko. Despite people thinking this activity is wasteful, this activity can actually help people to socialize and also to help the economy on the whole. By buying merchandise and renting costumes we can support the people behind them.

My Experience In Buying Subscriptions: A Consumerism Studies

People who buy things that they don't actually need can be considered consumerism. Consumerism and identity can not be separated from one another. People need a certain item in order to blend in with society. For example, you need to have a motorcycle if you want to join a biker gang. Consumerism limits the individual because they are forced to choose between pre-made products that the capitalist had created instead of creating something by themselves. One such example is buying a subscription to games and streaming platforms. I myself had an experience of buying this kind of product. People usually buy this kind of product for convenience purposes. Youtube premium offers no advertisement benefit, even though you can easily skip ads by waiting for 5 seconds, some people still buy it. This created an unconscious identity where people with Youtube premium appear to be more “elite” than those who are not buying Youtube premium. Another experience in buying a subscription for me is buying starlight in “Mobile Legends'’. This subscription offers various benefits including new skins, in-game currency, and many more. But we don’t need this subscription to play the game. People buy this to show off their new skin which people don’t have. Yes, buying subscriptions can indeed benefit us and can be extremely helpful, but it will benefit the developer more. The developer can just give the benefit for free users but instead they close it behind a paywall in which the price is not expensive but is also not cheap either. It makes people subconsciously think that the product is not cheap enough and that the benefit it provides is not enough, but it is also not expensive enough for working-class people to buy. So, do I agree with buying subscriptions? No, will I buy it again in the future? probably yes.
