Masculinity in the Eyes of Public
The idea of hegemonic masculinity only proves that the concept of “man” is actually only built upon the notions of “stoicism” and “strong”. What I mean by that is a man must be stoic, it means that he must not show emotion, he must not complain about his problem to anyone, and he certainly must not shed any tears in front of anyone. So, why must this notion of man being stoic exist? it all comes down to human pride and his fear and insecurities toward other people. Men think that if they get caught crying, their value in society will significantly drop and they think that he is a weak people. He is insecure that if he is seen crying, women will stay away from him. Another notion of man is that they must be “strong”. Being strong here means that he has a muscular body type that makes people psychologically think that he is a strong person. Men believe that by being strong, they can raise their value in the eyes of others. Another point that correlates with muscular body type is that somehow, men that like sports are valued more than smart men with good grades and depictions of smart men in movies are always someone who is a nerd and being a subject of bullying while the jocks are the bully. While these negative aspects are harmful to society on the whole, hegemonic masculinity also promotes positivity. For example, a man, according to hegemonic masculinity, must be brave enough to take a risk.
