So many wonderful presentations as part of the First Annual Day of Learning here at Howard Community College! Our own Director Cindy Paige Desi is teaming up with English faculty member Rick Leith to share how Community-Engaged Learning can enrich the teaching and learning experience for students and faculty while benefiting the greater community.

Have you seen the newest piece of public art on campus? HCC is one of twelve sites participating in ARTsites 2022, organized by to "increase accessibility of public art within the county." BLM is a striking steel sculpture located near the northeast entrance of the Science, Engineering and Technology building and will remain there through Summer 2023.

In addition to the Black Lives Matter movement that began in 2020 and continues today, we here at CCCE are also reminded of athlete-activists who took a stand against racial inequality in America. In 1968, Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists on the Olympic medal podiums in Mexico City, and in 2016, Colin Kaepernick first took a knee on the sidelines before a NFL game. Their advocacy and activism on behalf of their communities is a lasting legacy. We are so grateful to have this statue on campus to inspire our community.

Stepping into summer with some fresh paint and a new sign!

On March 16th HCC Silas Craft Collegians, along with CCCE and their instructor Candace dePass, participated in a poetry feedback event with CCCE's community partner, Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop. Free Minds uses books, creative writing, and peer support to awaken incarcerated and formerly incarcerated youths and adults to their own potential.

Silas Craft students were able to meet with Free Minds poet ambassadors and staff via Zoom before providing uplifting feedback on various poems from members who are still incarcerated. Poems are then returned to each poet with colorful feedback for them to read. This event allows our students to engage with issues of youth violence and incarceration and connect with members through the powerful medium of creative writing, while also reflecting on their own lives and their course curriculum.

On Friday March 18th, students from the Rouse Scholars freshman class along with CCCE staff and their instructor, professor Kofi Adisa, served at Parks & People in Baltimore. Students spent the afternoon doing gardening work by trimming grasses, pruning trees and cleaning up leaves along the road to promote plant growth in that area this spring. The group filled 16 large trash bags with the leaves and trimmings from the clean up!
