A professor in our department and a professor from the Forestry Department formed the Urban Forest Initiative (UFI). In a recent project through UFI, students participated in a "Scale Scrub" on campus to remove scale insects from campus trees.

Wax worms eat through polyethylene plastic, biodegrading it. By studying them, scientists may be able to devise an industrial-scale solution for plastic waste management.

Humans create approximately 78 million tons of plastic from packaging alone in a single year, and 32 percent of it ends up in the waters of the planet, so we need a solution to this problem!

Congrats to UK AG student Alonna Wright! Under the tutelage of our professor Dr. Bruce Webb just won the Alltech Young Scientist award with a project combating the corn earworm with a nudivirus.
