Two Entomology Students Won Tracy Farmer Forum Awards with Works Conducted in Western Kentucky
Izabela Gomes, and Yaziri Gonzalez the two entomology graduate student were awarded with the Tracy Farmer Institute for Sustainability and the Environment Sustainability Forum on December 6, 2018. They won the outstanding research poster at the campus-wide Forum based on their work conducting outreach programs with the Amish Community in Cerulean, Trigg Co. in 2018. Izabela and Yaziri conduct their field studies in Princeton. Izabela works with the soybean stem borer and Yaziri with the stink bugs affecting soybean in the Villanueva Entomology laboratory.

A professor in our department and a professor from the Forestry Department formed the Urban Forest Initiative (UFI). In a recent project through UFI, students participated in a "Scale Scrub" on campus to remove scale insects from campus trees.

Wax worms eat through polyethylene plastic, biodegrading it. By studying them, scientists may be able to devise an industrial-scale solution for plastic waste management.

Humans create approximately 78 million tons of plastic from packaging alone in a single year, and 32 percent of it ends up in the waters of the planet, so we need a solution to this problem!

Today on #internationalwomensday we honor UK entomologist and first female valedictorian at the University of Kentucky Mary Didlake. Didlake received her BS and MS at UK, worked her entire career (1891-1957) at the university and was briefly department chair way back in 1929. She was truly a groundbreaking woman. Didlake died in 1971 at the age of 96.
