"My cultural identity has definitely shaped who I am," says Hannah Dominguez, BS environmental science, current co-op at the The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. "I feel it is my responsibility to help pave a path and act as a role model for people in my family and the Latine/Hispanic community."

At the Academy, Drexel co-op students find connection between their cultural roots and their passion for science. From a tropical field studies course in Ecuador to building greater Latin American representation in the Academy's Library & Archive to discovering new opportunities for community-building, these Dragons are celebrating their heritage and creating inclusive spaces in academics and research.

At Drexel University, our dive into experiential learning opportunities from the moment they arrive!

Incoming students in the Drexel University College of Arts and Sciences Department of Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Science (BEES) participated in the Pre-Term Field Experience at Barnegat Bay Field Station in Waretown, New Jersey. Students collected water quality data, investigated local algae and plankton, waded through the marsh at the Lighthouse Center, collected crabs, and canoed the Wading River in the Pine Barrens.

Through hands-on experience and mentorship, our students engage with their professional interests from the very beginning of their Drexel experience.

Meet Joelyne Jacob and Katie Moorcones, elected president and vice president of Drexel University’s Undergraduate Student Government Association (USGA)! 🐲

Jacob, computer science and math ’26, is part of the Sanitation Health Aid Relief Project, which has driven much of her work in USGA. Moorcones, political science and sociology ’25, was involved in the former “Can We Talk?” program in the Pennoni Honors College as a moderator and is a qualitative research assistant for the AJ Drexel Autism Institute.

With a new academic year and new leadership roles, these Dragons are ready to get to work.

"I always knew that stepping into this role would mean filling some very big shoes... but my advisers emphasized that every president brings their own unique leadership style and work ethic," says Jacob. "Vivek and Sanjana set a remarkable foundation for the board, and Katie and I are committed to building on that and strengthening the board and our connection with the University community."

"For my co-op, I am the production assistant for Comcast's Ralph J. Roberts (RJR) Forum, our two-floor, 500-person amphitheater located in the heart of the Comcast Technology Center and named after the company's founder. My role is to provide production support and technical assistance for a variety of employee programs at Comcast," says Carrie Madden, a current Drexel student.

As a custom designed major, Madden is studying Creative Direction in Entertainment, a combination of Entertainment Arts Management, Communications, and Hospitality Management. During her co-op with Comcast, Madden is embracing every opportunity. At the RJR Forum, Madden led an employee event for Jenna Bush Hager's virtual book club, "Read with Jenna," complete with a book signing, meet and greet, and fireside author chat.

"When I am not supporting events for Comcast, I am VP of Recruitment for my sorority, where I get to hone my event and production skills to create memorable experiences for new members joining Drexel's campus!" Madden shares.

"Whether it's a backyard BBQ or a milestone event for Comcast employees, I love planning events that create impact and bring smiles to many."

The Philly Chef Conference™ returns for its 10th year on Oct. 13-14. Started by the Food and Hospitality Management program in Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions in 2013, the original Philly Chef Conference is an important tradition for students to learn alongside industry leaders. This year's conference is more focused on Philadelphia, education and student engagement.

The annual conference aims to engage Drexel students with industry leaders, while also connecting members of the regional restaurant and food community during the two-day event. The latest food and beverage ideas and techniques will be showcased through educational lectures, panel discussions and demonstrations.

It is back-to-school season for undergraduate and graduate students alike on Drexel's campus! DrexelNEWS asked our faculty and staff for advice for incoming graduate students, as they embark on their next academic journey.

"Graduate school is very different from the undergraduate experience. It is a time to take a deep dive into a specific area of interest. Make the most of your graduate experience by being engaged, asking questions and taking advantage of all the opportunities presented to you!" shares Anne Converse Willkomm, associate dean of the Graduate College and associate teaching professor in the Department of Communication in the Drexel University College of Arts and Sciences.
