Thanks to those who came to the first buddy training session! We had a chance to talk about a lot of stuff and came up with some ideas for sessions and events that the buddies can organise...
We agreed that the buddies for each department should consider going into the first year level meetings and introduce themselves as buddies, this way the first years are likely to remember your face if they ever wanted to come find you to talk. Buddies who haven't been to a training session can still do this - perhaps it's better to do it soon, possibly in the next week.
We came up with a few ideas for events to be held once everyone has been to a training session - the Fine Art students are being encouraged to come in as much as possible and occupy studio space. So organising for everyone to come in and have a cuppa and a biccie in the first year space, introducing yourself to first years and having a natter, might encourage people to get into uni.
In terms of sessions and workshops, the first year Fine Art students have a critical review deadline on the 23rd of November so it would be great if we could organise a drop in session where third and second years brought their previous reviews with them as examples of work. This sort of thing could also be really useful for current second years too if they wanted to take a look at some of the third years completed portfolios.
Emma Lloyd has organised group crits this term which take place on a Friday. This is a really great opportunity to test work out, but not many people turn up! Perhaps the buddies could help to publicise it a bit more?
AND we've come up with a great idea... We're going to organise a GALLERY CRAWL each couple of weeks. Best thing is we don't have to organise anything: there are loads of gallery openings each week in Nottingham; get a group together, see some art, ending with a final destination of a nice public house. Simples.
