Sir Isaac Newton: The father of modern physics. A genius responsible for great leaps in maths and physics. There was more to him, though. He lived at a time of superstition, and he was a product of his time. Amongst other things, he practised alchemy.

I will be starting private lessons for O and A level soon.

I was introducing Quantum Theory to my students, and wanted to do a quick revision of physics related to the subject. When it came to properties of waves, I wanted them to know that refraction happens to both waves and particles.

This is how I wanted to do it:

I said, let's say I'm walking, and this students "loves" me a lot and puts some oil on the floor. So, as I'm walking on dry floor, I'm travelling on one medium, but when I step on the oil, I have changed medium, my speed changes and I sliiiiiiiiiip!!!

The thing is this, I wasn't just saying this, but demonstrating it as I described it!

The further thing is this: I actually slipped!

The students laughed

and I wasn't badly hurt! :)

So, during one of my lessons, one of my students was using his mobile. I asked him to put it away. Instead, he just hid it behind his pencil case and kept using it.

When I noticed this I was annoyed.

With a stern voice I told the class "When you don't see something, it doesn't mean it's not there! Do you know how we know that black holes exist? We can't see black holes, but we know they're there because of the way they affect the things (stars) around them!"

Looking directly at the student I then said "I know your mobile's there by the way you're behaving!"

Dramatic pause

Then I said "Do you think I'm stupid? If so, why are you learning advanced level physics from me?"

That calmed me down, and I continued with the lesson :)

Today, while teaching, I remembered an incident from a few years back. I was explaining about stretching of materials, and how they have a constant called "stiffness". One student burst out laughing (for obvious reasons).

Then I told him "I think you're the type of person to laugh when you hear the term Homo Erectus"

And he laughed hysterically!
