The IST Wave Energy Group published a new article entitled "Sea trial results of the biradial and Wells turbines at Mutriku wave power plant" in the Energy Conversion and Management journal by L.M.C. Gato, J.C.C., Gato and A.A.D. Carrelhas.

This research was partially supported by European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under Grant Agreement No. 654444 (OPERA Project) and the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology - FCT, through IDMEC, under LAETA, project UIDB/50022/2020, and project MIT-EXPL/SOE/0094/2019. A turbina birradial, patenteada em 2011, colocou o Técnico no grupo da frente da investigação mundial na área do aproveitamento da energia das ondas, mas a sua génese remonta a 1974. Tudo começa com a entrada na história do Técnico (e pelo Pavilhão Central adentro) de “um senhor chamado Agnelo David, na altura com cerca de 40 anos, comerciante de profissão, em Almeirim, e inventor nas horas vagas”. Não tinha formação técnica nem científica, mas trazia uma ideia: as ondas do mar, do oceano, tinham muita energia e talvez fosse possível aproveitá-la. A semente germinou e anos depois nascia no Técnico um grupo de investigação que se tornaria num dos mais competitivos a nível internacional. O grupo esteve, por exemplo, envolvido na construção da primeira central de energia de ondas do mundo, que funcionou entre 1999 e 2018, na ilha do Pico. Na origem destes mais de 40 anos de investigação no sector está uma história incrível de ideias que (também) nascem fora da academia.
