I read about 1,200 applications a year as a senior admissions counselor at the University of Chicago. The hardest thing to explain to families is that being qualified and being selected are two different outcomes.

If a consultant guarantees admission, walk away. Nobody outside that committee controls seats, applicants or institutional priorities in a given year.

Three tests before you sign: honest promises, the student does the actual work, and the advice serves the student instead of the company.
