TWIGA SERIES: Tanzania Biodiversity and Conservation

Introducing Twiga! The 2025 students in the Tanzania Biodiversity and Conservation course brought along a new mascot to share in their journey. ‘Twiga’ means giraffe in Swahili.

Twiga had a front row seat for all our wildlife adventures on the truck. Some of Twiga’s favorites included sighting a wildebeest herd in Ngorongoro Crater, a close encounter with a lion, and a coffee plantation tour on Mt. Kilimanjaro. In the evenings he joined the crew for delicious meals such as this squash soup prepared by our amazing chef’s team.

Join SUNY Oswego’s Biological Sciences faculty members Susan Hammerly and Karen Sime in 2026 and take Twiga on his next set of adventures!

Want to join Twiga on his adventures? Speak with Susan Hammerly and Karen Sime ( ) at the Study Abroad Fair, this Wednesday, September 24, between 10:30 - 1:30 p.m. at the Marano Campus Center and you too can travel to Tanzania next summer!

COLLARING SERIES: Tanzania Biodiversity and Conservation Summer 2025

Students had the unique opportunity to observe the collaring of a lion, conducted by Ngorongoro Conservation Area rangers and veterinary staff as part of a study to monitor lion health and movements. This event was part of the training for students in a Wildlife Veterinary course at Sokoine University of Tanzania. We met up with the group in Ngorongoro Crater and went through the training with them.

The training started with a lecture on the importance of radio collars in conservation work from Ngorongoro Conservation Area Veterinary officers. The class learned about the drugs and rifle charges used when tranquilizing lions. Once the lion was safely tranquilized it was time to glove up to assist in removing ticks!

Before the tranquilizer reversal drug was given the class got a group photo with the lion. Students returned to a safe location to watch the lion wake up and walk away into the gathering night.

Last June SUNY Oswego Biological Sciences faculty members Susan Hammerly and Karen Sime ( ) took 8 Oswego students (mostly zoology majors) to Tanzania as the culmination of their spring 2025 course, Tanzania Biodiversity and Conservation. This is the 6th time that the class has been offered!

They started the 12-day safari getting to know their hosts at the College of African Wildlife Management (nicknamed Mweka). Mweka is situated near the town of Moshi, on the lower slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, and trains students for careers in conservation, with most graduates going onto careers as park rangers, wildlife ecologists, and tour guides. Mweka faculty members gave the class lectures and hands-on instruction on local flora and fauna as well as the history, cultures, and conservation challenges of the region. At the end of the class, the students earned a certificate in African wildlife conservation.

This year’s trip featured visits to Serengeti National Park, with its abundant wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, elephants, hippos and other spectacular wildlife; Tarangire National Park, with its magnificent baobab trees; and Arusha National Park, where the class hiked to a waterfall and met several families of warthogs along the way. Tent camping in these locations gave the students the chance to get up close and personal with some of these wildlife!

Other highlights included a tour of a coffee plantation on Kilimanjaro (with some delicious samples), and daily enjoyment of amazing Tanzanian food. In Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the class visited the famed paleoanthropology site at Olduvai Gorge, and a Maasai village, and bought honey from women beekeepers at roadside stands. Perhaps the most exciting activity was participating in the collaring of a lion in Ngorongoro Crater – post coming soon!

Before coming to Korea I was pretty worried about the food honestly, would I be getting tired of Korean food? But they have such a large selection of kinds of food, and I’ve had some of the best meals of my life here 🥹 You can also see I’m a repeat customer at a few of these spots… Not in order but here you see Korean, Japanese (mostly), Vietnamese, Thai, and western food! Along with a snack spread 🙂‍↕️

Current Oswego Abroad student Delaney Hillman will be taking over our Instagram account TONIGHT! She’ll be sharing highlights from her academic year at Pusan National University (PNU) in Busan, South Korea, and answering any questions you may have about studying abroad.

Delaney is a rising senior majoring in Human Development with a minor in Creative Writing.

When asked why she wanted to study abroad, Delaney shared: “It’s been something I’ve wanted to do my whole life—it’s the beginning of my goal to see as much of the world as possible! I chose Korea because of how culturally different it is from the United States. In Human Development, so much of what we study relies on culture, so it felt right to immerse myself in a place that contrasts significantly with the States.”

“I’ve fallen in love with Busan during my time at PNU! Experiencing Korean culture through its food, architecture, and language has opened my eyes to entirely new horizons. I love how an adventure is always just a few subway stops—or a bus ride—away. Korea’s compact size makes it incredibly easy to explore. Busan offers a unique blend of mountains, beaches, and vibrant city life—you can really find your perfect balance here. PNU also brings together professors and students from around the world, making it easy to connect globally. I’m so glad I chose to study here, and I’d absolutely do it again.”

Be sure to tune in tonight for Delaney’s Instagram takeover!

I’ve already made a bunch of posts about Germany, but I’ve actually also studied in Ireland!

Here’s some photos from March of 2022. When I wasn’t in the office working at my internship I got to walk around Dublin and travel to a bunch of other breathtaking sights around the island. I saw places like the Cliffs of Moher, Kilkenny Castle, and an old monastery!

Of all the countries I traveled to during my time abroad, I adapted to Ireland the quickest. I was living right in the middle of Dublin and the vibrant community of international students and the endless activities that were available made it impossible to be bored. Irish people are also incredibly friendly! I got to interact with so many wonderful people when I went to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade! It was truly an unforgettable experience.

I obviously can’t talk about study abroad without a food dump! Here are a bunch of pictures of delicious foods I ate in Germany that I’m still thinking about.

Germans have a cultural tradition called Kaffee und Kuchen where they meet up to drink coffee, eat cake or pastries, and catch up! It’s an especially popular practice in the afternoons. I got to try so many yummy pastries when I stopped at cafés or bakeries while out and about in cities like Munich, Kempten, Leipzig, and Frankfurt.

Germans also eat a lot of roasted meat, potatoes, and vegetables. Kartoffelsalat (potato salad) and Schnitzel was super popular with my classmates and I during group meals.
