Women aren’t under-qualified. They’re under-supported.

In this episode of Carnegie Conversations, Tanya Arnold takes on one of sport’s most complex challenges: why women remain under-represented in coaching and what really needs to change. She’s joined by Leanne Norman (Director of the Women in Sport Research and Innovation Hub), Annette Stride (Director of the Centre for Social Justice in Sport and Society at Leeds Beckett University), and Vicky Huyton from the Female Coaching Network, all of whom are closely involved in the Women in Coaching Task Force.

The conversation moves beyond headlines and into the lived realities of women in the coaching profession from unstable contracts, unequal pay, costly CPD, informal “tap on the shoulder” recruitment, and cultures that too often leave women feeling isolated or unsafe. The message is clear: progress won’t come from fixing women, but from redesigning coaching systems that were never built with them in mind.

Drawing on insights from across sport this episode explores what modern coaching could look like, how better structures benefit everyone, and why changing mindsets matters just as much as changing policy.

Find out why why representation alone isn’t enough and how the Women in Coaching Task Force is pushing for real, systemic change

Performance starts with science.

We supported Ian Stringer in preparation for his dual marathon world record attempt in Samoa, with in-depth treadmill testing, DXA scanning, and expert-led nutrition and physiological planning in our labs.

All in aid of NACOA, turning elite preparation into meaningful impact.

“Maybe if I knew what I know now, I might have been knocking them all out from my first title, but it’s all about learning and developing.” Josh Warrington

In the latest episode of Carnegie Conversations, Josh reveals how Strength and Conditioning and collaboration have transformed his training... and why training smarter matters as much as training harder.

Host Tanya Arnold was also joined by Strength and Conditioning coach Andrew Langford, Director and Co-Founder of International Universities Strength and Conditioning Association ( IUSCA ) and Dr Alex Dinsdale (Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Biomechanics, Leeds Beckett University ).

and were proud to host the inaugural professorial lecture of Professor Theocharis Ispoglou, Director of our Centre for Active Lifestyles and Healthy Ageing.

His talk, Fuel and Force – Re-imagining Healthy Ageing, explored how strength, movement, and nutrition protect muscle, prevent sarcopenia, and support independence.

Professor Ispoglou shared:
“Delivering my inaugural lecture at Leeds Beckett is an honour. Our research is helping people age well – from resistance training and protein nutrition to approaches that maintain muscle and independence. Working with our community and partners, we can transform healthy ageing. I’m excited for the future and proud that Leeds Beckett is leading the way.”

The event was part of our Inaugural Professorial Lecture Series, showcasing the work and impact of our new professors.
