For Pennsylvania Freemasons, June 24 isn't only St. John's Day, which honors John the Baptist, who provided inspiration for Freemasonry’s development and growth. It is also the day the first Grand Lodge was formed in 1717 in England, and the day the Masonic Temple’s cornerstone was laid in Philadelphia in 1868!

This photo was taken on that day in Philadelphia. An estimated 10,000 Masons attended the ceremony.

In 2025, over 12,000 visitors passed through these doors. Were you one of them?

It was an eventful year at the Masonic Temple, with the completion of our exterior lighting project, dedicated in December, and a special year-long display of Wanamaker artifacts coinciding with the closure of the Macy's store occupying the Wanamaker Building.

Masonic Reflections: Sublime

The Master Mason degree has long been described within Freemasonry as “Sublime,” not because of outward ceremony alone, but because of the themes it addresses. Unlike the preceding degrees, which rely heavily upon the symbolism of architecture and labor, the Third Degree turns toward the deeper questions of human existence: fidelity, mortality, loss, hope, and the enduring search for truth.

The degree speaks through allegory and symbolism rather than dogma. Its lessons are not intended to establish a particular creed, but to encourage reflection upon the nature of life and the hope that goodness, truth, and virtue possess a permanence greater than the failures or tragedies of the material world. In this way, Freemasonry allows each Mason to contemplate these teachings according to his own conscience and faith.

At its heart, the degree emphasizes loyalty, integrity, perseverance, and the strength found in brotherhood. It teaches that true character is revealed not in times of ease, but in moments of trial and uncertainty. The raising of what has fallen becomes both a moral lesson and a symbol of humanity’s continual effort to rise above ignorance, selfishness, and despair.

For many Masons, the enduring power of the degree lies not merely in what it says, but in what it invites each individual to consider for himself. Its symbolism continues to resonate because it addresses questions that have occupied the human heart in every age.
