The Graduate Centre in Governance and International Affairs offers postgraduate programs in International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Governance and Public Policy. The Centre also houses the School’s RHD students and the Rotary Centre for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution, one of only six in the world. Are you an underappreciated political genius? Then enter the competition to win $500!

Details
• Chair of the judging panel: Annastacia Palaszczuk.
• Submit a 600-word policy brief for the Federal Opposition’s Shadow Minister for Defence.
• Your aim is to challenge the Minister on the public stage using any combination of the following tactics:
I. Exposing the distance between the Minister’s rhetoric and reality;
II. Exposing the gap between the Minister’s conduct and their stated political views.
• 200 words should be your suggested talking points for the Shadow Minister to use in Parliament regarding defence policy.
• 400 words should be a background briefing on the facts of the case that support the talking points.
• Include footnotes to publicly available documents and websites only (using any common referencing system).
• +/- 10% leeway on all word limits. Excess words for any part will result in disqualification.

Criteria
i. Rhetorical skill;
ii. Existence of accurate supporting evidence in the background briefing.

Submission and Deadlines
Open to all current UQ students at any level
Entries open: 8 October 2025
Entries close: 17 October 2025
Winner announced: 7 November 2025
