"I'm sitting here going through The White Curtains diary. I've gone through it countless times and suddenly I'm awed by how profound all the other artists here are. The conversations, the work that went into the project, the feelings, and the intrigue abouthow a whole group of people sat down and made such a long standing and probably socially relevant decision about CURTAINS!!!!

What do curtains symbolise? They shade our private lives from prying, disinterested eyes of the general passersby. Curtains protect household contents from sun damage, and they can change the mood of a space by their sudden explosion of colour, or quiet tranquility, or even depth in texture, whatever. But in this instance, why WHITE CURTAINS? What did the people who made the decisions hope to hide, shade, protect or disguise? Was it a social statement?

Suddenly I'm burning with curiosity and I'd love to know what happened before the decision, and why maintain this?

Suddenly, after so many years, questions in my head, admiration for you guys' awesome talent and commitment, and how, different strangers met from all over the country over an issue seemingly mundane but perhaps with a deep, if not sinister significance."

- Nokulunga Nobuhle Zondo

Something very strange is spreading through the streets of Sea Point. It invades every home and flat, yet no one notices the peculiar thing.

Until one day, one cold winter day, 5 artists join forces to investigate the big mystery: who turned all the curtains in the windows into the one and only colour of white?

They embarked on a journey into the unknown.

This is the true story of their adventures.

Cape Town, South Africa, 2015 5 artists and 2 curators join forces to investigate a big mystery: who and why turned all the curtains in the windows of Sea Point…

Valeria Geselev interviews Nokulunga Zondo, a nurse who wrote a poem that inspired a traveling group exhibition. What started with her frustration with the South African peculiar custom of white curtains, reveals the power of art as social commentary.
