Prof Ramneek Ahluwalia Delivers Powerful Address at UNESCO Africa Peace Forum

On the occasion of the 19th International NGO Forum, held in official partnership with UNESCO at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris under the theme “Building Together a Culture of Peace Across Africa,” Prof Ramneek Ahluwalia, CEO of Higher Health SA, chaired and moderated key sessions while delivering an important address focused on peacebuilding, dialogue, and cooperation across the African continent.

The prestigious forum brought together representatives from UNESCO, Member States, and civil society organisations to engage on some of the continent’s most pressing priorities. Prof Ahluwalia chaired discussions on three critical themes - water, education, and youth - emphasizing that these pillars are fundamental to building sustainable peace, stability, and prosperity throughout Africa.

In his address, Prof Ahluwalia highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships and youth empowerment in shaping Africa’s future:

“We are especially proud of the strong collaboration with the UNESCO Division Priority Africa, whose partnership has been instrumental in shaping this initiative and ensuring that Africa remains at the centre of these global conversations.”

He further stressed the urgent need to create inclusive opportunities for young people:

“But if young people are excluded, unheard, unemployed, or disconnected from opportunity, we risk deepening instability and social fragmentation. Therefore, our responsibility is clear: we must create systems that empower youth not only to participate in society, but to shape its future.”

Prof Ahluwalia reaffirmed Higher Health’s ongoing commitment to placing young people at the centre of its work through civic education, life and soft skills training, leadership development, mental health support, and values-driven programmes that contribute towards building a peaceful, resilient, ethical, and socially cohesive Africa.

Men’s Indaba Dialogue Session Highlight

During the recent Men’s Indaba Dialogue Session hosted by Higher Health in collaboration with the University of Mpumalanga, Families South Africa (FAMSA) and Masikhulumeni Madoda, Peer Educator Hlulani Sean Nkuna shared a reflection on the silent struggles many men face.

He unpacked how toxic masculinity and societal expectations often place men under pressure to always appear strong, successful and emotionally unaffected even when they are struggling academically, financially or mentally.

“We suppress ourselves, everything that you have in your brain, everything that you have in your mind… as men we are expected to know everything, to provide, and when we fail, we become a problem to ourselves and to our families.”

He further emphasised how this pressure can lead to stress, anxiety and unhealthy coping mechanisms from emotional withdrawal to risky behaviours all rooted in the expectation that men must always “have it together.”

He concluded with a call for change and openness:

“When you cannot cope, speak to other men. Speak to other people.”
