Professor Fatima Khan, Director of the Refugee Rights Unit at the University of Cape Town (UCT), delivered a thought-provoking keynote address examining South Africa’s immigration laws, access to employment for foreign nationals, and the country’s commitment to African regional integration.
Focusing on the Immigration Act and work visa requirements, she highlighted the challenges faced by migrant workers, particularly those from neighbouring SADC countries. She also emphasised the need to align South Africa’s immigration policies with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Her address called for critical reflection on the protection of migrant workers’ rights and the role of immigration law in advancing a more inclusive and integrated African continent.
