Every product you pick up, sit in, or interact with 👉️ someone designed it. That someone could be you.

Industrial Design is the discipline at the intersection of creativity, engineering, and human experience. Industrial designers create finished products that are beautiful, functional, safe, and manufacturable at the right price for the right market.

At TUT, our Advanced Diploma in Industrial Design prepares you for an international profession with a local edge. You'll work with real materials, real tools, and real briefs, from consumer products to furniture, medical devices to transportation design.

If you think creatively, solve problems logically, and love to make things 👉️ this is your space.

Studio Diaries 📐✏️

Today it's back to the drawing board in the best possible way.

Our Masters Architecture students are in studio with their design consultants and Industrial Design student aids, taking a fresh look at their projects with new eyes and new perspectives. Industry insights are being shared, elements are being reworked, and every decision is being measured against one question: is this truly practical, functional, and usable for the students and teachers it's being built for?

This is the part of the design process that separates a good idea from a great outcome. And our students are leaning into it fully.

The work continues. The standard is rising. 💪

This week, our students left the studio and stepped into the real world.

A site visit to Thuto Bohlale Secondary School, in Mamelodi brought our Masters Architecture students face to face with the community they are designing for. Teachers. Learners. Spaces that need solutions. A school in the middle of a construction project, growing, but still in need.
This is the moment the brief becomes human.

No amount of studio work prepares you for standing in a classroom of forty-five learners with a single teacher and understanding — viscerally what the design challenge actually is. What it feels like. What it demands of you.

Our students walked the grounds, engaged with staff and learners, and left with something no lecture can provide: a genuine understanding of the people their work will serve.

The co-design process is live. The community has been heard. And the work ahead is more meaningful for it.

Architecture is more than buildings. It's the art and science of designing spaces that shape how people live, work, rest, and move through the world.

At TUT, our Architecture programme takes you from hand-drawn sketches to large-scale spatial thinking, with an emphasis on the South African built environment and the communities that depend on it.

You'll work in dedicated studio spaces, tackle real briefs, and develop the skills to design buildings that matter.

If you've ever looked at a building and imagined your mark on it 👉️ Architecture might be your calling.

Last week, Enrico Deysel represented TUT’s Department of Architecture & Industrial Design at the National Corobrick Student Awards and walked away with a national commendation as runner up for the National Prize. 🏆

His thesis project, Conserving the Succulent Karoo Region, proposes an ecological research centre for cultivation and seed banking within one of only two arid biodiversity hotspots on the planet. The design integrates passive climate strategies, locally sourced stone, and organic roof forms, architecture that doesn't impose on the landscape, but grows from it.

This is what designing with purpose looks like.
Congratulations, Enrico. The studio is proud of you. 🌿

Thanks to the Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) Faculty of
Engineering and the Built Environment’s (FEBE) Short Learning
Programme (SLP), the Executive Course in Housing Policy, 30 delegates
from the City of Tshwane have been allowed to deepen their knowledge
of housing policy and understand its development since the dawn of
democracy in South Africa.
The first-of-its-kind housing policy programme was conducted in July and
facilitated by Prof Amira Osman and Dr Emmanuel Nkambule from FEBE’s
Department of Architecture and Industrial Design. The City of Tshwane
officials who hold various positions in the human settlement department
attended the two-week SLP.
According to Prof Osman, Dr Luxien Ariyan, an expert with extensive
experience in housing policy, was instrumental in launching the SLP.
“Dr Luxien Ariyan has a wealth of experience in housing policy and has been
involved with the government’s Department of Housing and Human Settlements
for many years,” said Prof Osman.
Dr Ariyan, a visiting professor to many institutions, has presented numerous
papers at land and housing conferences and workshops globally. His
extensive experience in government, particularly in the land and housing
sectors, includes policy drafting. According to Prof Osman, his longstanding
academic involvement, focusing on the built environment, makes him
well-suited to lead the course.
The first cohort of 17 delegates completed the intensive course, which
included an extensive assessment process, with the next group environed
to start at the end of August 2024.
“They hail from various city departments with expertise in finance, law, and
planning. With extensive experience in human settlements, they are wellversed
in the intricate systems of this field. Our scope
encompasses all housing delivery-affecting policies,
regulations, and laws in South Africa, including the legal
drafting process and the paramount importance of
unambiguous policy, legal judgments, compliance, and
effective implementation,” said Prof Osman.
