Presidential Appointments Must Be Taken Seriously
I was one of those who were very happy when our President, Hakainde Hichilema (HH), introduced new ministries such as the Ministry of Technology and Science. Personally, I saw this ministry as one of the potential backbones of our economy.
Every ministry and sector can become more productive and efficient when technology is treated as an important tool for national development.
However, I was surprised that a ministry which, in my opinion, needed youthful and innovative minds to make it truly meaningful was placed under an older generation of leadership. I have nothing personal against Mr. Mutati, and this is not an attack on him. However, I strongly believe that the appointment was not the most appropriate for a ministry that needed fresh ideas, innovation and an aggressive approach to technological development.
Over the past five years, I have personally followed many of the activities and announcements from the Ministry of Technology. Unfortunately, I have struggled to see major developments that would make an ordinary Zambian confidently say that technology has truly transformed our country.
Does the ministry even have fully functional provincial structures and offices? Where are the competitive provincial technology exhibitions? Where are the programmes mobilising artisans and young innovators? Where are the initiatives that expose our young entrepreneurs and potential investors to countries that are succeeding in technology and innovation?
Technology does not only mean complicated machines, artificial intelligence or advanced computers. Technology can start with solving simple problems.
Honestly, we should be concerned as a country that we continue importing simple manual tools such as hoes while thousands of young Zambians graduate every year without employment.
