NMCZ CONDUCTS STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT ON DIPLOMA IN MIDWIFERY CURRICULUM

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Zambia (NMCZ) today hosted a stakeholders’ engagement meeting to review the needs assessment findings for the Diploma in Midwifery programme.

Speaking at the official opening, NMCZ Registrar and CEO, Mrs. Beauty Zimba, said the findings will provide actionable evidence for curriculum improvement and alignment with regulatory requirements.

Mrs. Zimba noted that the curriculum was last reviewed in 2022 and implemented in July 2023, and that a review is now necessary to reflect the evolving role of the midwife.

“The review of the curriculum for midwives is important because it helps align the programme with emerging trends, technological advances, and accreditation and regulatory requirements,” she said.

The Registrar emphasized that a competent midwife should be knowledgeable, practical, and possess strong clinical reasoning skills, which are critical for quality health care delivery.

She explained that the needs assessment was conducted to identify gaps in midwifery education and competencies, as part of the Council’s contribution to the attainment of Vision 2030.

“The report presents a gap analysis conducted by subject matter experts on the currently implemented Diploma in Midwifery curriculum. It identifies the gaps and focuses on the needs in the evolving profession of midwifery,” Mrs. Zimba added.
