Mechanics for Africa (MfA) runs a college in Ndola, Zambia training underprivileged young people in motor mechanics and skills for life. We are a registered charity and our students’ education is sponsored by donations from supporters around the world. Every penny you give is spent in Zambia, where it’s most needed. All the UK fundraising is done by volunteers and all UK support costs are covered by separate donations.

While schools may be closed for the holiday, learning and growth continue on our campus. Some of our students have chosen to remain on campus, taking part in our holiday piecework programme.

Through piecework, students are given an opportunity to contribute towards their school fees, gain practical work experience, develop responsibility, and build valuable life and workplace skills as they carry out their daily assigned tasks.

As our students head into the holidays, we wanted to pause and show you how far they've come.

There's Regina, who arrived unable to type — and is now flying through her Clerical Operations course, taking shorthand at 45 words a minute and getting to grips with office equipment she'd never touched before.

There's our mechanics students, heads under the bonnet together, stripping down engines, cleaning combustion chambers and learning every component by heart — the kind of hands-on skill that turns into a Skill for life.

There's the quiet pride of a student on industrial attachment, learning to repair and maintain cars and finally "knowing" what the job he's training for actually feels like.

And there's the moment that gets us every time: one of our Lecturers, grinning behind the wheel, telling us that one of the project vehicles is now working.

A term of firsts, for all of them. Here's to what next term brings.

Learning to drive is about more than getting from one place to another. It is about building confidence, gaining independence, and creating new opportunities.

For Grace, what started as a new challenge has become an exciting journey of growth. Through patience, practice, and determination, she has developed valuable driving skills and grown more confident behind the wheel with every lesson.

Watching students like Grace gain skills that can positively impact their future is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. These lessons are not just about driving—they are about empowering individuals to reach their full potential.

We are proud of Grace and all that she has achieved so far. We look forward to seeing where this journey takes her next.

The journey to education is not always easy. Sometimes, students have to walk long distances every day just to attend classes.

With access to bicycles, our students shorten their commute and make their educational journey a little easier.

A bicycle changes more than a commute. It means:

Less time spent on the road. Greater morale knowing students are valued and supported,
A better chance to stay focused, pursue their education, and achieve their dreams

At Mechanics for Africa, we remain committed to supporting our students in practical ways that help them succeed.
