What if we could watch plant cells grow, rebuild, and divide in real time, for weeks? 🌱

A new study featuring CGSB researchers Alyaa Farouk Hessin, Mohammed Ateequr Mohammed, and Kenneth D. Birnbaum, alongside other researchers, introduces an “aggregates-on-chip” microfluidic platform for long-term plant cell culture and live imaging.

Tested with Arabidopsis thaliana and Zea mays (corn), the platform kept cells viable for over two weeks, allowing researchers to follow the same cells as they grow, regenerate their cell walls, and divide.

This technology offers a powerful new way to explore plant cell development and regeneration as it happens.

One step closer to healthier pregnancies 🧬

Women are born with all the egg cells they will ever have, and some remain in the ovaries for decades. As reproductive age increases, so does the risk of chromosomal errors that can affect fertility and pregnancy.

A recent study in Nature Aging focused on REC8, a protein that acts like molecular “glue,” holding chromosomes together during egg cell division.

Using mouse eggs, researchers found that chromosomes remained stable while REC8 stayed above a critical level, but once it dropped below that threshold, stability declined suddenly rather than gradually.

This discovery offers a new way to understand reproductive aging and could help researchers explore future approaches to fertility.

🧠 Every brain cell has a story to tell, and now we can read it one cell at a time.

A new review co-authored by NYU Abu Dhabi’s Center for Genomics and Systems Biology (CGSB) researchers Rana El Danaf and Claude Desplan highlights how single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) is transforming neuroscience.

By analyzing gene activity in individual cells, scRNA-seq allows researchers to uncover previously hidden neuronal and glial cell types, map brain development, and better understand how neurological diseases begin.

Instead of studying millions of cells together, this technology examines each cell individually, providing an unprecedented view of the brain's complexity. It is also helping scientists identify early, cell-specific changes linked to disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, paving the way for new biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets.

What if the enzyme that protects us from arsenic toxicity also helps produce energy? 🔬

For years, AS3MT has been known for detoxifying arsenic, a toxic element that poses a major global health challenge. But researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi asked a different question: Could AS3MT have another role?

Using zebrafish, they discovered that AS3MT is also essential for regulating metabolism. The enzyme helps maintain healthy mitochondria—the cell's energy producers. When AS3MT was lost, zebrafish developed disrupted liver metabolism, fatty liver disease, and reduced movement, revealing a previously unknown role in energy metabolism that is independent of its arsenic-detoxifying function.

These findings uncover a new link between metabolism and liver disease while highlighting the collaborative research environment at NYUAD, bringing together students, a Kawader Fellow, postdoctoral researchers, faculty, and collaborators from around the world.

Well-fed gut microbes, stronger immune cells 🦠💪

A recent study published in Immunity reveals that gut microbes can influence how immune cells respond to melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer.

The key isn't just which bacteria live in the gut, but what they produce. When gut microbes break down plant-based fiber, they generate butyrate, a compound linked to stronger immune responses and slower tumor growth in mice.

Researchers also found that melanoma patients who responded better to cancer treatment had higher levels of butyrate production.

These findings highlight the powerful connection between nutrition, the gut microbiome, and immune health, suggesting that even small dietary changes may help support the body's natural defenses.

Saliva reveals a survival code inside oral bacteria 🦠

Our mouths are a challenging environment for bacteria, with oxygen, immune defenses, and constant saliva flow. So how do they survive?

Researchers discovered unusual circular DNA molecules called Inocles in saliva that help bacteria adapt and thrive. Even more intriguingly, Nature Communications reports that Inocles levels were significantly lower in people with head and neck or colorectal cancer, raising the possibility that saliva could one day help detect cancer early.

Could a simple saliva test become a future diagnostic tool? More research will tell.
