For scholars in the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholars Program, a conversation with His Excellency Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, Cultural Adviser to His Highness the President of the UAE, and Chancellor of the United Arab Emirates University, offered a rare perspective on the UAE’s founding years, the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the values that continue to guide the nation.

Connecting with the NYU Abu Dhabi community on the West Coast.

Vice Chancellor Fabio Piano joined alumni in Los Angeles and San Francisco for conversations about their experiences since graduation, NYUAD’s future direction, and opportunities to stay connected with the university.

In Los Angeles, alumni gathered at Picogrid, a technology company co-founded by NYUAD alumni Martin Slosarik, Dan Chirita, and Zane Mountcastle.

In San Francisco, the programme featured a conversation between Piano and Tami Gjorgjieva, Class of 2019, followed by a social gathering at Coval, an AI startup co-founded by Brooke Hopkins, NYUAD Class of 2018.

NYUAD alumni continue to extend the university’s impact around the world. Gatherings like these celebrate their achievements and strengthen the global community that connects them to NYUAD and to one another.

Curiosity can take research in unexpected directions 🗺️

At NYU Abu Dhabi, it means exploring new frontiers in space, rethinking how we clean our water, uncovering the stories behind MENA’s businesses, and imagining new possibilities for robotics.

Here are five research stories that caught our attention this week, each offering a different perspective on the questions shaping our world.

Marwa is a pioneering Emirati aerospace engineer pursuing a PhD in Astrophysics and Space Systems at NYU Abu Dhabi. After a career in aviation safety and accident investigation, she is now researching satellite swarms and space systems.

Hugh spent 10 weeks at NASA Glenn Research Center, working on wireless communications. His path started at NYUAD, where he became Professor of Electrical Engineering Murat Uysal’s first undergraduate research student and began working on vehicle-to-vehicle communications.

Israa’s research uncovers the family stories behind MENA’s businesses. We loved how it brings a more human perspective to business history, showing the people and stories behind the companies that shaped the region.

Reham is developing materials that could capture and break down PFAS, or “forever chemicals,” in water. We were inspired by her focus on turning membrane science into practical solutions for cleaner water.

Samuel’s work explores what happens when robots move beyond observing the world to actually interacting with it. From navigating construction sites and handling materials to one day helping with everyday tasks at home.

Moon dust, made in Abu Dhabi. 🌕🧪

Vigneshwaran Krishnamoorthi, Research Assistant and planetary geologist at NYU Abu Dhabi’s Space Exploration Laboratory, shows us how they recreate lunar soil right here on campus.

Working with Principal Investigator Dimitra Atri, Vigneshwaran’s research explores planetary analogue sites for the Moon and Mars across the UAE, using Earth-based environments to help us understand worlds beyond our own.
