In Week 1 of AY 2026-27, students from Architecture, Architectural Engineering and Civil Engineering came together for the annual EGIS Collaborative Design Project, an intensive five-day challenge that transforms classroom learning into professional practice.

The project's disciplinary supervision was overseen by Dr Hassam Chaudhry, Dr Harpreet Seth & Dr Mustafa Batikha and theme, "Beyond the Game: Adaptive Arenas for Tomorrow," challenged students to reimagine traditional arena design and explore innovative solutions for the future of the built environment.


A key highlight of the week was the involvement of Dar Al-Handasah (DAR), one of the region's leading multidisciplinary consultancy firms, which served as project client and industry partner. Students had the opportunity to engage with industry experts including Ibrahim Salah, Simon Chambers, Marwa Ismail, and Ibrahim Tarek, gaining valuable real-world insights throughout the project.

The creativity, innovation, and professionalism demonstrated by our students highlighted the power of industry-academia collaboration in preparing future-built environment professionals.

Another incredible milestone. PhD researcher Mohamed Omar from the Built Environment discipline at Heriot-Watt University Dubai has published what is believed to be the first comprehensive study of its kind in the highly ranked journal Materials. The research uses machine learning and statistical modelling to develop data-driven design-strength equations for hardened 3D-printed concrete.

Conducted in collaboration with Dr Mustafa Batikha and Dr Md Azher Uddin, the study addresses a key challenge in the wider adoption of 3D concrete printing by helping bridge the gap between experimental research and practical engineering applications.

This work highlights our growing contribution to innovative and sustainable construction technologies, supporting the future development and adoption of 3D concrete printing within the built environment.
