The institute is committed to providing a dynamic, challenging and safe learning environment for all students regardless of gender, ethnicity or social circumstances. We also have a special focus on supporting the most disadvantaged group in Afghan society – the orphans and street vendors – to help them attain a vocation that will allow them to reach their full potential, while contributing to their emotional healing. Through the provision of an internationally-accredited curriculum our graduates will have the skills, creative vision and confidence to contribute to the artistic, social and cultural life of Afghanistan, and the rebuilding and revival of Afghan music traditions. Afghanistan’s National Institute of Music will be the model for future music schools and colleges to be built throughout Afghanistan.

🎶 Celebrating International Music Day

On 1 October, we celebrate the universal language of music - a language that brings people together, preserves cultural heritage, and creates bridges across communities and generations.

For the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, music is also a powerful expression of identity, resilience, and hope. Through education and performance, our students and musicians continue to share Afghanistan’s rich musical heritage with audiences around the world.

To mark this occasion, we are pleased to share an article by Dr. Ahmad Sarmast, Founder and Director of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, reflecting on the meaning and enduring power of music, and on the role it continues to play in connecting people across borders.

Dear friends of ANIM and dear people of Afghanistan,

Here you have the press release from ANIMP on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the Taliban’s return to power.

These five years have been marked by deepening repression, the erosion of fundamental freedoms, and the systematic denial of the basic human rights of the Afghan people.

During these five years, Afghan women and girls have been progressively excluded from education and public life. Freedom of expression has been severely restricted, while music, artistic activity and many forms of cultural expression have been suppressed. Afghanistan’s rich musical and cultural life has been pushed into silence.

For the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM), the return of the Taliban also forced an entire generation of young musicians into exile. Students, teachers and musicians who had built their lives around music and education were forced to leave their homeland and rebuild their lives abroad.

But exile did not silence them.

🎵 آدم و حوا | Adam wa Hawa

«آدم و حوا»، تولید دیگری از انستیتوت ملی موسیقی افغانستان، مستقر در پرتگال، که با الهام از رنج، مقاومت و امید مردم افغانستان ساخته شده است؛ اثری که صدای آزادی، کرامت انسانی و حق آموزش و آفرینش هنری را به گوش جهان می‌رساند.

این اثر در پنجمین سال بازگشت طالبان به قدرت منتشر می‌شود؛ پنج سالی که در آن موسیقی و هنر سرکوب شده و میلیون‌ها انسان، به‌ویژه زنان و دختران، از حقوق اساسی‌شان محروم شده‌اند.

🎵 Adam wa Hawa | Adam and Eve

“Adam wa Hawa” is another production of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM), based in Portugal. Inspired by the pain, resilience, and hope of the people of Afghanistan, the work carries a message of freedom, human dignity, and the universal right to education and artistic expression.

The work is being released on the fifth anniversary of the Taliban’s return to power — five years during which music and the arts have been suppressed and millions of people, particularly women and girls, have been deprived of their fundamental rights.

The Afghanistan National Institute of Music in Portugal proudly presents the song “Banu: Her Voice, Her Freedom.” This work is a musical outcry against the Taliban’s gender apartheid and a call for the restoration of the fundamental rights of women in Afghanistan.

The song is a collaboration between the Afghan Youth Orchestra and the acclaimed Afghan artist Farangis Mirzad. The lyrics are written by Negin Badakhsh and Sanam Anbarin, while the composition is by Farangis Mirzad. The piece is presented with a musical arrangement by Tiago Moreira da Silva, conductor of the Afghan Youth Orchestra.

“Banu” stands as a symbol of the resilience, hope, and perseverance of Afghan women and girls. It reflects the shared voice of music, art, and the pursuit of justice in calling for an end to the Taliban’s systematic discrimination and repression of women in Afghanistan.

انستیتوت ملی موسیقی افغانستان در پرتگال با افتخار ترانۀ «بانو: صدای زن، پژواک آزادی» را همگانی می‌سازد. این اثر، فریاد موسیقایی در برابر سیاست‌های آپارتاید جنسیتی طالبان و در حمایت از بازگرداندن حقوق اساسی زنان افغانستان است.

این ترانه حاصل همکاری ارکستر جوانان افغانستان با هنرمند محبوب کشور، فرنگیس میرزاد بوده که شعر آن را نگین بدخش و صنم عنبرین سروده‌اند. کامپوز این سرود ار فرنگیس میرزاد است که با تنظیم موسیقی تیاگو موریرا دا سیلوا رهبر اورکستر جوانان افغانستان پیشکش میگردد.

«بانو» نمادی استقامت، امید و پایداری زنان و دختران افغانستان بوده و‌ تجلی هم‌صدایی موسیقی، هنر و عدالت‌خواهی برای پایان دادن به تبعیض و سرکوب سیستماتیک زنان توسط طالبان در کشور است.

This act represents not only a direct assault on art and culture, but also a deliberate attempt to erase the cultural identity and artistic heritage of the Afghan people. Throughout history, music h it as been an integral part of Afghanistan’s social and cultural life, serving as a powerful medium for expression, social cohesion, the transmission of values, and the celebration of the country’s rich cultural diversity.

The Afghanistan Youth Orchestra and the Afghanistan National Institute of Music in Exile consider these actions to be a clear violation of cultural rights and fundamental freedoms. We call upon the international community, cultural institutions, and human rights organizations not to remain silent in the face of this alarming trend, and to take urgent and meaningful action to protect Afghanistan’s musical heritage and provide tangible support to Afghan artists.

Quando, a 15 de agosto de 2021, se deu a queda de Cabul, a música foi proibida pelo regime talibã. Portugal acolheu 273 refugiados, dentre os quais alunos e professores do ANIM. Este ato de uma relevância transcendente, que não acolheu a devida atenção da sociedade civil portuguesa, permitiu salvar não apenas vidas humanas (especialmente de jovens raparigas), mas também uma tradição musical ameaçada.

O Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM) tem-se notabilizado por um trabalho contínuo na salvaguarda e transmissão do património musical afegão, bem como na promoção da igualdade de género, de que se destaca a orquestra Zohra, composta por 35 mulheres.
A identidade cultural de um povo assenta, entre outros matizes, na forma como se expressa musicalmente.

Assim, o ANIM junta-se ao Ensemble Darcos e ao fadista Marco Oliveira, combinando a música tradicional dos dois países, o Afeganistão e Portugal.

O lançamento acontece no dia 10 de dezembro e ficará disponível em CD e nas plataformas digitais.
