THE NEW “NORMALCY” IN A REGIME OF FOOLISHNESS
"Recently, during a Skype interview with a hiring committee at a known Chinese university, I was constantly wondering “what can I tell these Chinese people to convince them that they should give me the job,” just as I had done it in my interviews with American universities. Today, I realized that it wasn’t about what I could tell them, but about how I would hear them or sense their presence even despite the distance (the whole committee was composed of women). Only a fool, during the Coronavirus/COVID pandemic, hasn’t already fathomed the strength of the Chinese influence over the west. With or without globalisation, after 2020 no one in the world would be able to appeal to ignorance when we are questioned about the role of China in the age of the Anthropocene or, put in other words, the Corona-Generation will have to get used to seeing a red flag for the time to come."

SOUNDS & ECHOES OF DISEASE:

"In Dante’s Inferno sound is a constant narrative device that illustrates that punishment is accompanied by torturing heated sounds. For instance, in the canto XIX Dante invokes the rage of the French horn as one of the punishments for those trapped in the third grave due to prostitution and procuring carnal favors in exchange of gold and silver. In the same canto, we witness a sonic image of punishment, as Dante draws a scenario where from the mouth of tiny wells emerge the feet and legs of sinners, while the rest of their bodies remain underneath the darkest depths of the wells. Even though sound doesn’t resonate in this image, it is indeed silence, or the muting of the sinner’s lamentations, what this episode from Dante’s Inferno brings to the consciousness of the reader. Nothing could be more eloquent, when the intention is to mute the mouth of a lamenting well, that filling that mouth with the bare bodies of sinners. Just imagine a swelling, drooling, and burning mouth made of stone that is choking with slimy human bodies. Now, living in Cienfuegos, Cuba, I experience daily this Dantean exposure to heated waves of torturing sound."
